Kastania (Καστανέα) Aitoloakarnania

Kastanea[2] or Kastania[3] is a village in the mountainous Nafpaktia region of the Aitoloakarnania prefecture.

Geography - History

Kastania is built between the Ardini and Xerovouni mountains, at an altitude of 860 meters[4] and to the right of the Kastaniotikos Kakavos stream. The village is located 58 km north of Nafpaktos. Sights of the village are the old stone parish church of Agios Ioannis Prodromos, the picturesque square, the traditional stone school building, the traditional fountain with three taps, the ravine of Kastaniotikos Kakavos, the forests and the chapels around it. Outside Kastania, on the Platanos - Ypsilo Chorio provincial road, there is the "Hani tou Lioliou", which is still in operation and is located in a wooded saddle on the road to Evinolimni, the villages of Kravara and Evrytania[5].

Administrative - Population

It is mentioned as a settlement, after the Revolution of 1821, written as Kastania in 1835 in the Official Gazette 19A - 07/12/1835 to be annexed to the then municipality of Arachova. In 1919, with the Official Gazette 112A - 25/05/1919, it was designated the seat of the newly founded community of the same name. In 1940, its name was corrected to Kastania.[6] With the implementation of the Kallikratis program, it constitutes the Local Community of Kastania, which belongs to the Municipal Unit of Platanos of the Municipality of Nafpaktia and its population according to the 2011 census is 70 inhabitants[7].
