Chomori (Χόμορη) Aitoloakarnania
Chomori is a mountainous settlement located in Nafpaktia, Aitoloakarnania prefecture, at an altitude of 700 meters[2].
Geography - Sights
Chomori is built amphitheatrically on the southwestern slopes of Mount Ardini (Xerovouni), below the wooded hill of Agios Konstantinos, between the torrents Mega Rema (west) and Chomoritiko (east), which end in the Kotsalos River[3]. It is located north of Nafpaktos and can be accessed either via Eleftheriani, a total distance of 52 km, or via Platanos, a total distance of 66 km[4]. Of interest are the paved square with the large plane tree, its stone fountain, the view and the stone houses of the village, most notably the "Tower of Logothetaion" of 1756[3].
The Monastery of Panagia Kavadiotissa
The most historical attraction of the area is the Monastery of Panagia Kavadiotissa or the Holy Monastery of the Dormition of the Virgin Mary, located southwest of the village, surrounded by acacias and bushes and has been classified as a listed monument since 1938[5]. According to tradition, the icon of the Virgin Mary came from the village of Kavvada in the Thessalian Agrafa[6]. The founding inscription that is built into the monastery's catholicon has been destroyed and the only chronological indication remains the date 1725 on an icon of the iconostasis[6]. The catholicon, dating from 1831, is a royal style without a dome and the abbot's house (dating from 1815) is a building of impressive construction with a roof of traditional slabs. Of particular value are the icons of the wood-carved iconostasis and especially the multifaceted composition of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary[3].
History
Homori has been mentioned since the beginning of the 17th century and its name is likely to come from the ancient Greek word "omoros", meaning neighboring. In 1912, the village was already mentioned under the name Homeri and in 1940 it was corrected to Homori[7]. The French traveler François Poqueville names it with the name of Chomori in the list of villages in the Kravara region, inhabited by 10 families[8]. From 1695 to 1775, there was a bishopric that had jurisdiction over Dorida and mountainous Nafpaktia[9].
Important people
The Logothetis or Logothetopoulos family, two of whose members became bishops and served in the bishopric when it had its seat in Chomori[3].
Dimitrios Papacharalambous, businessman and great benefactor of Nafpaktia, who bequeathed the Public Central Library of Nafpaktos, the National Stadium, an event hall and the Philharmonic[6].
Administrative information
The village was officially referred to, after the liberation, as Chomeri in 1835 with the Government Gazette 19A - 07/12/1835 annexing it to the then municipality of Proschi. In 1912 with the Government Gazette 261A - 31/08/1912 it was designated the seat of the homonymous newly founded community and in 1940 its name was corrected to Chomori.[10] With the implementation of the Kallikratis program, together with Agia Triada, they form the local community of Chomori, which falls under the Municipal Unit of Platanos of the Municipality of Nafpaktia of the Region of Western Greece. According to the 2011 population and housing census concerning the permanent population of the country, 77 residents were registered as a community, while 66 as a settlement[11].
