Achladokastro (Αχλαδόκαστρο) Aitoloakarnania
Achladokastro is a small mountainous village in Central Greece in the Aitoloakarnania Regional Unit.[2]
Geography - History
Achladokastro is built on the southwestern slopes of Mount Alonaki and on the projection of Mount Vounaki (1,005 m)[3] at an altitude of 725 meters[4]. Its old name, from the time of the Turkish occupation, is Artotiva[5] and in 1828 it was renamed Achladokastro, which name came from the composition of the words "pea" + "castle" due to the large production of pears in the area and the castles that exist due to its natural location.
Important sights within the village are the Church of Agios Nikolaos and the Elementary School, which today operates as a Folklore Museum. Outside the village, the Artotiva Bridge[6] or "Kamara" is very noteworthy, the oldest on the Evinos River, built at its narrowest point[3], where in 1818 a battle took place between the local chieftain I. Angelakis and Youssef Arapi. In 1995, with the Ministry of Culture/ARCH/B1/F33/39725/1077 Government Gazette 798/14-9-1995, it was designated, due to its historical and architectural importance, as a historical monument[7]. Another attraction is the "Kastraki" site, where tiles with inscriptions were found, an ancient coin with the inscription "Proschion" as well as the chapels of Agios Georgios, the Prophet Elias (Ai-Lias) and Agia Paraskevi[8].
Administrative data
The village was officially referred to, after the liberation, as Artotiva in 1835 with the Government Gazette 19A - 07/12/1835 annexing it to the then municipality of Proschi. In 1919 with the Government Gazette 112A - 25/05/1919 it was designated the seat of the newly founded community of the same name and in 1928 with the Government Gazette 156A - 08/08/1928 it was renamed Achladokastro.[9] With the implementation of the Kallikratis program it constitutes the Local Unit of Achladokastro and belongs to the Municipal Unit of Platanos of the Municipality of Nafpaktia. According to the 2011 population and housing census concerning the permanent population of the country, 106 residents were registered in Achladokastro.[10]
