Faraklada (Φαρακλάδα) Messinia

Faraklada[2], formerly known as Foteinos Faros, is a settlement near Kyparissia and administratively under the Municipality of Trifylia, Messinia Prefecture.
Location

The village is located approximately 6 kilometers southeast of Kyparissia[3][4] at an altitude of 65 meters and is approximately 2.5 kilometers from the coast of the Ionian Sea.

History

The name of the village comes from the gorges[3] that existed along the river south of the village. Based on oral traditions, its roots date back to the period of Venetian rule.[3] The oldest name of the village was "Foteinos Faros".[4]

During the period of Turkish rule, the settlement was the seat of the local aga.[3][4] The last agha before the Greek Revolution of 1821 was Mehmet Koushiuris, who showed particular interest in the area and granted privileges to Faraklada. Of course, conflicts arose from time to time between Greeks and Turks. With the declaration of the Revolution, on 28 March 1821, the chieftain Kakogiannis or Karkogiannis on 28 March 1821 liberated the village and took control of the Mehmet Koushiuris Tower.[3] There is even mention of the existence of a firman, until a few years ago, in which the above events were narrated and the privileges that had been granted to the village from time to time were recorded. The next historical reference to the village is the relocation of many families from Arcadia to it in the period from 1865 to 1886.[4]

Administrative history

Faraklada was officially annexed to the old Municipality of Kyparissia in 1835.[5][6] In 1899 it was transferred from the Prefecture of Messinia and became part of the Prefecture of Trifylia,[7] for about a decade, until 1909, when it returned to the Prefecture of Messinia,[8] as a settlement of the District of Trifylia. In 1912 the village of Faraklada was detached from the old Municipality of Kyparissia and became the seat of the Community of Faraklada.[9][10] Faraklada remained the seat of the homonymous community from 1912 to 1997, when, as part of the changes that occurred in local government through the "Kapodistrias" plan, it was subordinated to the abolished Municipality of Kyparissia,[11] until 2010. Since 2011, after the new changes of the "Kallikratis" plan, it now belongs to the new Municipality of Trifylia.[2][12] This municipality was established with the Kallikrati Program by merging the pre-existing municipalities of Aetos, Avlonos, Gargaliana, Kyparissia, Filiatra and the community of Tripyla. Faraklada is today the seat of the Local Community of Faraklada, which also includes the newly established settlement of Litharorixi.[2]

Residents

The settlement, based on the 2011 census, has 320 permanent residents, who are employed in various agricultural activities.

Buildings – events

In addition to the houses in the village, there is its church, which belongs to the Holy Metropolis of Triphylia and Olympia and is dedicated to the Presentation of the Virgin Mary. On the day of the feast (November 21), a local festival is held.[3] However, a popular festival is also held on July 27, the feast of Saint Panteleimon. The reason for this celebration is an icon of the Saint, which the Arcadian settlers brought with them.[3]

The minister and member of parliament of Messinia, Giorgos Katrougalos, also comes from Faraklada.[28]
