Myro (Μύρον) Messinia

Myro, officially Myron and formerly referred to as Myrou or Moiras, is a settlement near Kyparissia and administratively under the Municipality of Trifylia, in the Prefecture of Messinia.[2]

Location

The village is located approximately 8.5 kilometers northeast of Kyparissia at an altitude of 252 meters and is approximately 8.5 kilometers from the coast of the Ionian Sea.

History
Mycenaean era
Main article: Peristeria

The area of the settlement, in antiquity, was part of the kingdom of Nestor, ancient Pylos.
Archaeological site of Peristeria

The Archaeological site of Peristeria,[3][4][5][6][7][8] which was initially investigated by archaeologist Spyridon Marinatos and then by Georgios St. Korres, is located approximately 1.5 km north of the village of Myro, on the hill of Peristeria, which is a natural fortress with three steep slopes and smooth access only from the south side. There, funerary monuments and houses have been discovered, dating from the ME to the YEIIIB period, with reuse in the Roman period.[6] These include three vaulted tombs within the site and one more to the south of the hill, as well as part of a palace[9] and a circular building of undetermined use ("cycle").[6][10]

According to archaeologist Spyridon Marinatos, in 1965, the workers, coming from Myro, caused him great emotion for their contribution during the excavations, as: "The enthusiasm of the workers, all residents of Myros, was touching... Everyone volunteered to serve as night guards... The next day, the third cup was found, which lay alone about 50 cm. southernmost."[6][11]Administrative history

Myro was officially annexed to the old Municipality of Kyparissia in 1845,[12][13] while it is mentioned in 1853 in the second volume of "Hellenic" by Iakovos Rizos Ragavis as a "rural location of Myron" of the Municipality of Kyparissia in the Province of Triphylia "slightly inhabited".[14] In 1899 it was transferred from the Prefecture of Messinia and became part of the Prefecture of Triphylia,[15] for about a decade, until 1909, when it returned to the Prefecture of Messinia,[16] as a settlement of the Province of Triphylia.

In 1912, the village of Myros was separated from the old Municipality of Kyparissia and annexed to the Community of Raches, with the village of Raches as its seat,[17][18] until 1928,[19] when it was separated from the Community of Raches and designated as the seat of the Community of Myro, to which the settlement of Alimaki was also annexed.[20] From 1940[21] to 1961, the settlement was officially called Moiras and the Community as the

Community of Moira.[22]

Myro remained the seat of the homonymous community from 1928 to 1997, when, as part of the changes that occurred in local government through the "Kapodistrias" plan, it was subordinated to the abolished Municipality of Kyparissia,[23] until 2010. Since 2011, after the new changes of the "Kallikratis" plan, it now belongs to the new Municipality of Trifylia.[2][24] This municipality was established with the Kallikratis Program by merging the pre-existing municipalities of Aetos, Avlona, Gargaliana, Kyparissia, Filiatra and the community of Tripyla. Myro is today the seat of the Local Community of Myron of the Municipality of Trifylia.[2]

Residents

The settlement, based on the 2011 census, has 5 permanent residents, who are employed in various agricultural tasks.
