Raches (Ράχες) Messinia

Raches, officially "Rachai" and formerly referred to as Rachais, is a settlement near Kyparissia and administratively falls under the Municipality of Trifylia, in the Prefecture of Messinia.[2]

Location

The village is located approximately 5 kilometers northeast of Kyparissia at an altitude of 130 meters and is approximately 2.5 kilometers from the coast of the Ionian Sea. It is connected by two asphalt roads directly to the Pyrgos - Kyparissia National Road, which beyond it lead to the beaches of the area.

History

The area of the settlement, in antiquity, was part of the kingdom of Nestor, ancient Pylos. The history of the village itself dates back to the mid-19th century, when families of Arcadian shepherds from Alonistaina, who came down to winter with their flocks to the location of Raches, which is located on the ridges of hills, from which the name of the village came, finally decided to settle there permanently.[3][4]

Administrative history

Raches was officially annexed to the old Municipality of Kyparissia in 1845.[5][6] In 1899 the village was transferred from the Prefecture of Messinia and came under the Prefecture of Trifylia,[7] for about a decade, until 1909, when it returned to the Prefecture of Messinia,[8] as a settlement of the District of Trifylia.

In 1912, the village of Raches was detached from the old Municipality of Kyparissia and annexed to the Community of Raches, which was designated as the seat of this Community,[9][10] to which the settlements of Myron and Alimaki were also annexed until 1928,[11] when these two settlements were detached from the Community of Raches and annexed to the Community of Myros, Myron as its seat and Alimaki as a settlement annexed to it.[12] Raches remained the seat of the homonymous community from 1912 to 1997, when, as part of the changes that occurred in local government through the "Kapodistrias" plan, it was subordinated to the abolished Municipality of Kyparissia,[13] until 2010. Since 2011, after the new changes of the "Kallikratis" plan, it now belongs to the new Municipality of Trifylia.[2][14] This municipality was established with the Kallikratis Program by merging the pre-existing municipalities of Aetos, Avlona, Gargaliana, Kyparissia, Filiatra and the community of Tripyla. Raches is today the seat and the only settlement of the Local Community of Raches of the Municipality of Trifylia.[2]

Residents

The settlement, based on the 2011 census, has 182 permanent residents, who are employed in various agricultural activities, mainly olive cultivation, as the area is full of olive groves,[4] while the village is famous for its production of purely organic products, such as wine and olive oil.[3][4]

In the village, apart from the houses, there are traditional cafes and grills around the central square, where the Monument to those who fell in the 1940 war is located.[3][4] To the east of the village is the central church, the Church of Agios Georgios, patron saint of the village,[4] while other churches in the village are the Church of Agia Paraskevi and the chapels of Agios Panteleimonas and Panagia to the north of Raches,[3] which belong to the Holy Metropolis of Trifylia and Olympia. In the area of the settlement there are also tourist facilities with rooms and apartments for rent. Near Raches and at a distance of about 3 kilometers from it, next to the neighboring village of Myros, is the Archaeological site of Peristeria, with a palace and vaulted tombs of the Mycenaean period,[3][4] while also near the village of Raches there is the Stalactite Gorge, which took its name from the stalactite cave located at the end of this gorge. The path leading to the Stalactite Gorge starts from the north side of the Archaeological site of Peristeria, while at the end of the path, after a hike of about half an hour, there is a spring with running water, a landscape with old plane trees and the cave with stalactites.[29]
