Xirokampos (Ξηρόκαμπος) Messinia

Xirokampos[2] and previously referred to as Maleniti or Maleniti or Maleniti, is a settlement near Kyparissia and administratively falls under the Municipality of Trifylia, in the Prefecture of Messinia.

Location

Xirokampos is located approximately 3 kilometers southeast of Kyparissia[2] at an altitude of 214[1]-240[2] meters and is approximately 3 kilometers from the coast of the Ionian Sea.
History

The area of the settlement, in antiquity, was part of the kingdom of Nestor, ancient Pylos. The village itself, built at the foot of Mount Egaleo,[2] has a long history. During the Venetian occupation it was referred to as Maleniti and was renamed Xirokampos in 1927,[5] a name that probably derives from the aridity and dryness that prevailed in its area.[6] The village is found under the names Maleniti or Maleniti or Maleniti in bibliographic sources-references. The settlement is also mentioned in various censuses of the Venetian Pronoites of the Serene Republic of Venice, which were made during the thirty-year period (1683/84-1715), during which the Venetians occupied the Peloponnese. Maleniti belonged, in 1689, to the province of Arcadia (or Arcadia, i.e. the area of present-day Kyparissia), which was one of the 4 provinces into which the Methoni district was then divided (Phanari province, Arcadia province, Navarino province and Methoni province).[7]

Administrative history

Maleniti was annexed to the old Municipality of Kyparissia in 1835,[8][9] while it is mentioned, in 1853, in the second volume of "Hellenic" by Iakovos Rizos Ragavis as a village of the Municipality of Kyparissia of the Triphylia Province with a population of 91 inhabitants, based on the 1851 census.[10] In 1879, Maleniti appears in the relevant census separately, as Upper Maleniti with 47 residents and Lower Maleniti with 85 residents. In 1899, the village was transferred from the Prefecture of Messinia and became part of the Prefecture of Trifylia,[11] for about a decade, until 1909, when it returned to the Prefecture of Messinia,[12] as a settlement of the District of Trifylia.

In 1912, the village was separated from the old Municipality of Kyparissia and became part of the Community of Stasio, of which the village of Stasio became its seat.[13][14] In 1927, Maleniti was renamed Xirokampos,[15] it was separated from the Community of Stasio and designated as the seat of the homonymous Community of Xirokampos.[16][17] Xirokampos remained the seat of the homonymous community from 1927 to 1997, when, as part of the changes that occurred in local government through the "Kapodistrias" plan, it was subordinated to the abolished Municipality of Kyparissia,[18] until 2010. Since 2011, after the new changes of the "Kallikratis" plan, it now belongs to the new Municipality of Trifylia.[2][19] This municipality was established with the Kallikratis Program by merging the pre-existing municipalities of Aetos, Avlona, Gargaliana, Kyparissia, Filiatra and the community of Tripyla. The settlement of Xirokampos is today the seat and the only settlement of the Local Community of Xirokampos.[2]

Residents

The settlement, based on the 2011 census, has 53 permanent residents, who are employed in various agricultural activities, mainly olive cultivation.[6]

Buildings – sights

In addition to the houses, the village has the village church, the Church of Saints Constantine and Saint Helen, which belongs to the Holy Metropolis of Triphylia and Olympia and celebrates on May 21. In the churchyard there is the Heroes' Monument, in honor of the dead fighters during the revolution of 1821, the Balkan wars, the Asia Minor campaign and the war of 1940.[6] At the entrance to the village is also the location known as "Bram' the Fountain".[6] According to local tradition, it was named this way because in 1825, Ibrahim had camped at this point, during his campaign in the Peloponnese, as there was drinking water there for his troops.[6]

The censuses of the Pronoites of the Serene Republic of Venice, Corner (1689), Grimani (1700) Angelo Emo (perhaps 1708), the undated census mentioned in the Querini-Stampalia manuscript (perhaps 1711), are four of the various Venetian censuses, which were attempted during the thirty-year period (1683/84-1715), during which the Venetians occupied the Peloponnese. To date, only the Grimani census has been fully published, by the historian and emeritus director of research of the National Research Foundation (NRF) Vassilis Panagiotopoulos, in his work "Population and settlements of the Peloponnese. 13th - 18th century", (1985).
