Areti (Αρετή) Ioannina
Areti is a semi-mountainous village of Epirus in the Regional Unit of Ioannina at an altitude of 410 meters[1]
Geographical - historical data
Areti is located in the plain of Kalamas (Thiamis) and west of the river, at a distance of 48 km. NW. from Ioannina (via Parakalamos) and 12 km. SW. from Kalpaki. It is built between the villages of Kouklioi (SW.), Repetista (N.), Vrontismeni (NE.) and Mazaraki (SE.). The village must have been first created during the period of the descent of the Slavs since its old name of Grimbiani[2] is a Slavic word and means either "steep place" or "mushroom place" (gribo = mushroom). The original settlement, "Palaiogrimbiani", was higher up on the slopes of Kasidiaris where some of its ruins exist. It began to be inhabited mainly in 1385 when the Despot of Ioannina Izaos granted it as a residence to the bishop of Vella[3].
With the same name, the village is mentioned in the Turkish statistics (salnames) of Epirus of 1895 as belonging to the nahiye of Kourenta of the kaza of Ioannina (64 houses - hanedes, 88 male and 90 female)[4]. After the liberation, it is officially mentioned in 1961 as being designated as the seat of the newly founded community of the same name. In 1955, with the Government Gazette 287A - 10/10/1955, it was renamed Areti[5]. According to the Kallikratis plan, it is the local community of Areti, which belongs to the municipal unit of Ano Kalama of the Municipality of Pogoni and according to the 2011 census has a population of 80 permanent residents.[6] The local community is characterized as a rural mountainous settlement, with an area of 7.919 km² (2011).[7]
