Ieromnimi (Ιερομνήμη) Ioannina
Ieromnimi or Geromnimi is a settlement in Epirus in the Regional Unit of Ioannina.[1][2]
General information
Ieromnimi is located at the northeastern foothills of the Sioutista (Kasidiaris) mountain range[1] at an altitude of 457 meters[3]. It is approximately 38 km northwest of Ioannina and 22 km south of Kalpaki (the seat of the municipality).
The village is full of Byzantine churches and chapels such as: Agia Triada, Panagitsa or Panagia, Kakavitsa (Komisis tis Theotokou) an old monastery built in the 17th century, Agia Marina, Ai Giorgis, built in 1880, Ai Dimitris and the Cemetery at the highest end of the village. Of particular historical value is the central church of the village, Agia Triada, which is a three-aisled basilica with a narthex, renovated in 1770.
Sights
In terms of natural beauty, the two historical springs whose waters irrigated the village plain are a challenge for the visitor. The "Nistikos" spring, which is one of the largest springs of the Kalamas River, is full of shady plane trees, and the "Nerotrivia", whose name indicates that a water mill operated there centuries ago, are unique natural sights. The waters of the Nistikos operated the village's watermill, a building of the 19th century, and in 1945 the only hydroelectric plant in the area operated for the needs of the village. There are also two small bridges there[4]. The "mill-watermill-mantania" complex and the bridges were designated by the Ministry of Culture as a historical monument.
In the village's Folklore Museum, one can see various everyday household tools from the last century, traditional costumes, textiles and a loom as well as a representation of the interior of a traditional village house.
While wandering around the village, the visitor will discover elements of traditional architecture such as the old cafe, located under the village church, the carved stone corners, the stately courtyard gates, the dry stone manor walls and above all the stately houses. The village's traditional community cafe still operates under the name "To Kafe tis Ieromnimis [5]", which also houses a guesthouse with rooms to rent for visitors[6].
Customs and traditions
The village, rich in traditions and customs, organizes various events, among which are the following: on Halloween (Prantza) bonfires are lit with tufts of holly and cedar in the village square, on August 17th the village festival is organized in the elementary school, at which the traditional food is offered, which is none other than the stew. During the autumn the Cultural Association of the village[7] organizes the xeflos and the bolia, a traditional custom of peeling and boiling corn.
Historical information
The village was founded in the 14th century, and it seems that the area was inhabited since ancient times, since the hills of Stselyms (Gymnolophus, 812 meters above sea level) and Kastri rise above the village, where there are still ruins of an ancient city and cyclopean walls. Hieromnimi has its roots in the Byzantine era, when it is believed to have been the property of a "Hieromnimon" (Hieromnimon [8] is an office (rank) of the Eastern Orthodox Church. The office was established during Byzantine times and its main duty was to observe the church code and draw up documents relating to legal transactions, while sometimes he also performed the duties of Archivist. He was also an alternate member of the Episcopal court). It seems to owe its name to the well-known family of the Hieromnimons of Ioannina.
Administrative data
It is officially mentioned in 1919, after the liberation, in the Government Gazette 184A - 19/08/1919 that it was designated as the seat of the newly founded community of the same name. During the administrative division of Greece with the "Kapodistrias" plan, until 2010, Hieromnimi belonged to the Local Department of Hieromnimi, of the former Municipality of Ano Kalama of the Prefecture of Ioannina.[9] According to the Kallikrates plan and its amendment by Kleisthenes I, it is a community[10] belonging to the municipal unit of Ano Kalama of the Municipality of Pogoni and according to the 2011 census it had a population of 169 residents[11] while according to the 2001 census it had 215[12].
Personalities
Ieromnimi is also the birthplace of the revolutionary and fighter Captain Spyros Krommydas[13], whose bust is at the entrance to the village.
