Ampelonas (Αμπελών) Karditsa
Ampelonas, officially Ampelon, is a lowland village of Karditsa[2] at an altitude of 100 meters[3].
Geography - History
Ampelonas is located on the eastern border of the prefecture of Karditsa with the prefecture of Larissa, west of the Enipeas River and east of the Sofaditis River. The village is built between Itea (south of it), Fyllo (southwest of it), Orfana (northwest of them), Kypseli (northeast of it) and Ermitsi (east of it). It is 12 km southeast of Palamas and 29 km northeast of Karditsa. At the location "Homatokastro" near the "Avlaki" stream, there is an archaeological site that is mentioned in the book by archaeologist Christos Tsountas "The prehistoric acropolises of Dimini and Sesklo" as an important settlement dating back to the Stone Age[4]. The old name of Ampelonas, from the time of the Turkish occupation, was Almadar and thus it is officially mentioned in 1883 in the Official Gazette 126A-02/04/1883 as being annexed to the then municipality of Fyllos which belonged to the prefecture of Trikkala. In 1928 with the Official Gazette 81A-14/05/1928 it was renamed to Chomatokastro and in 1940 to Almadarion. Finally in 1957 with the Official Gazette 119A-03/07/1957 it was renamed to Ampelonas[5]. According to the Kallikratis plan, together with Fyllo, they form the local community of Fyllo, which falls under the municipal community of Fyllo in the municipality of Palamas and, according to the 2011 census, has a population of 123 inhabitants[6].
