Petrino (Πέτρινον) Karditsa
Petrino is a village in the Karditsa Regional Unit, the Palamas Municipality and the Fyllos Municipal Unit[1].
Geography - History
Petrino is located on the northern border of the Karditsa prefecture with the Trikala prefecture, next to the banks of the Enipeas River and at an altitude of 120 meters[2]. It is 34 km northeast of the center of Karditsa, 42 km west of Trikala and 10.5 southwest of Palamas. In the area around the village there are many findings that indicate its habitation since ancient times. At its southern entrance from Itea, architectural structures and ceramics were found that date back to the Middle and Late Bronze Age. The Archaeological Museum of Volos exhibits several vessels from the Protogeometric and Geometric periods (Buccero type) that were excavated at this site. At the sites of "Alonaki" and "Vrysi" remains of an ancient city were found, which is likely to be the ancient Fakion and have been declared an archaeological site[3]. At the entrance from Sykies (or Sykeona) a section of a wall of a large building and tombs from the Protogeometric period have been excavated. At the junction of the roads from Petrino to Itea and Agios Dimitrios, a tumulus with burials in stone larnacae made of sandstone was destroyed. Excavations carried out in the area around this tumulus revealed cist and kalybite tombs with clay tiles.
Administrative
It was officially mentioned as a settlement in 1833 in the Government Gazette 126A-02/04/1883 when it was annexed to the then municipality of Fyllos which belonged to the prefecture of Trikala. In 1912, with the Government Gazette 261A-31/08/1912, it was detached from the municipality of Fyllos and designated as the seat of the community of Petrino[4]. According to the Kallikratis plan, together with Mesorrachi, it forms the local community of Petrino, which falls under the municipal unit of Fyllos of the municipality of Palamas and according to the 2011 census, as a community it has a population of 311 inhabitants, while as a settlement 305[5].
