Alonia is a village in the prefecture of Pieria. It has 508 residents (2021 census) and is located northeast of Katerini. It is the only settlement of the homonymous Local Community of the Municipality of Pydna - Kolindros. The central church of the village is the Church of Agios Panteleimonas and is celebrated on July 27. It is 21 kilometers from Katerini. Agriculture (tobacco cultivation) is the main occupation of the residents. The Local Community is characterized as a rural lowland settlement, with an area of 10,719 km² (2011).[1]
Education
The village has a single-seater Kindergarten, a two-seater Primary School with 2 teachers and 26 students (in 2000) and a High School, which has been operating since 1975. It also has a blood donor association, an agricultural cooperative, an Athletic Educational Association, named "O Digenis" (in football, it competes in the 3rd amateur category of the local championship of the Pieria Sports School) and the Cultural Association "Diogenes the Cynic". To facilitate students who live a long distance from the schools, a department of Additional Teaching Support has been operating in Alonia since 2006 as a branch of the 4th Unified Lyceum of Katerini[2].
Population
The village is sparsely populated and consists of refugees who came there after the Asia Minor Catastrophe in 1922. Before entering the village there is a dam which was used for the irrigation of the fields. Artesian wells have also been found. In addition to tobacco, hazelnuts are also grown in the village. The first hazelnut plants in Greece were brought to Alonia from Russia.

History
The creation of the settlement dates back to the period after the signing of the Treaty of Lausanne. About 25 families from Kars, near Trabzon came to the area and settled around the village square, in 1923-1924. They were followed by people from other areas of Trabzon, who settled in Kato Chorio and at the same time (1925) another group from the Kirikion area settled in neighboring Koukos and another went to the highest point of Alonia, where the exit to Paleostani is. Also during this period many refugees from the Pontic Face, (Yailatsik, Kiolkoi, Alikeris, Gakioi etc.) came and settled in the central part of the village.
Refugees from various parts of Pontus (Turkey, Russia) settled in Alonia during the periods 1919-20, 1924-27 and 1938-39. The last wave of refugees settled initially in Kalyvia Varikou and then in Platanakia.[8] .
Until 1926 the village was called Salonia Koukos. Three years later the first Primary School was built. In 1936 the construction of a new school began, but it was not operational due to the 1940 War. It operated from 1950 until 1978, when it was deemed unsuitable due to earthquakes and in 1987 the new Primary School was completed, which operates to this day.
