Afrodisia (Αφροδίσια) Chios
Aphrodisia is a small village in northern Chios. It belongs to the Municipality of Chios and, together with Chalandra, forms the Municipal District of Chalandri.
Name
The name of the village comes from the goddess Aphrodite. According to oral traditions, in the place where the church of Saint Mamas is located today, there was a temple dedicated to the goddess in ancient times.
Location
The village is built at the foot of Mount Amani. It is 55 kilometers from the town of Chios.
Sights
Among the sights of the village are:
the church of Saint Mamas.
the pilgrimage of Saint Mamas, which dates back to 1986. It is located at the entrance to the village.
the old fountain, which dates back to September 20, 1920 based on the inscription engraved on its front. In front of the fountain is a large concrete table, which serves as a gathering place for the villagers to make important decisions for the village and to party.
The football team
Aphrodisia is home to the football club: Leo Afrodision Amanis. The team was created on an amateur basis in 1988, from 1993 it participated in the third national category of the island and finally in 1996 it became a regular club. It was named Leo because the patron saint of the village is always depicted with a lion and because the address lions had already been used for the first players of the team. In 2000 it was crowned champion and moved to the second category of the island.
