Melanios (Μελανιός) Chios

Melanios or Melanio is a very small village in northwestern Chios, at a road distance of 60 kilometers from the city of Chios. Today it belongs to the homonymous municipal district of the Municipality of Chios. The average altitude of the village is 100 meters above sea level. Melanios is the westernmost village of the island, built on the western slopes of Mount Amani. The nearest settlement is the village of Trypes, about 4 km to the southeast and higher. A dirt road with a length of just over 1 km connects the village with Cape Mevo Melanios, the westernmost point of the island, where the marble monument of those slaughtered during the Destruction of Chios at the site of Mavros Gremos. Besides, castle ruins have been found in the area of ​​Pyrgos of the village.

The name of the village comes from the name of the cape and this from the adjective black = black.

Melanios has no plains. Its inhabitants are engaged in agriculture and the products are common in non-masticatory areas of the island: olives, almonds, vegetables, legumes and cereals.

The parish church (the "village church") of the village is honored in the name of the Brigadiers. There is also an old church of Agia Marina, on the feast of which (July 17) a local festival is organized. The village belongs ecclesiastically to the hierarchical supervision of Kourounia of the Holy Metropolis of Chios, Psara and Oinousses.
