Chalandra (Χάλανδρα) Chios

Chalandra is a small village in the Chios Regional Unit in the North Aegean Region, on the island of Chios, in its northern part, with a population of 12 inhabitants (2011 census).[2] It is built at an average altitude of 455 meters above sea level, at a road distance of 54 kilometers northwest of the city of Chios.

Geography-demography

The closest settlements are Afrodisia in the northwest and Keramos in the northeast, both at a distance of about 1 kilometer in a straight line. Halandra is at least 4.5 kilometers in a straight line from the sea (north coast). The village is built on one of the steep, but also greener eastern slopes of Mount Amani. Below Halandra is the settlement of Kamini, abandoned since 1964, with the church of Agios Modestos, the only one in Chios dedicated to this saint.

The main occupation of the inhabitants is agriculture, gardening and livestock farming. The main product of the people of Chalandra is walnuts. A folk song says:
"In Pispilou almonds, in Potamia toys, in Frodisia and from v we will get walnuts."

Administratively, Chalandra today belongs to the homonymous local community (area 9 square kilometers, with the only other settlement Afrodisia) of the Municipal Unit of Amani of the Municipality of Chios, in the Regional Unit of Chios of the North Aegean Region. Previously, completely correspondingly, it was the seat of the homonymous community, the District and the Prefecture of Chios.

Name

The name of the village is etymologically attributed by Amantos as coming from the medieval word Χαλαδριον/Χαραδριον = bed, solitary dormitory, hut. Therefore "Χαλάνδρα" refers to huts. On Chios, the toponym "Χαλάνδρα" is found in only two other places: in Didymes in the south (where the Monastery of Agia Matrona of Chalandra is also located) and in Vrontados.

The oldest reference to the village of Amani dates back to the 17th century and is by the traveler Francesco Piacenza, who mentions it as "Chalandre". Chalandra appears on the handwritten map of Francesco Lupazzolo in 1638 under the name Calandra, but he himself mentions it as Calandia in the text of his notes as a traveler. The inhabitants of Chalandra are called Chalandrousoi (fem. Chalandrousaynes) in the local dialect.
Location

The village is built inside an old fortress, traces of which are still visible today. Chalandra is basically divided into Upper and Lower Chalandra, with Lower Chalandra now in ruins, and old neighborhoods Upper and Lower Nemouria (from "Anemouria") high on the mountain, and Pyrgos. Places around the village are Petrokopio (from the quarry of the hard black-blue stone of the area), Fle(va)a, Sellada, Empoli, Dragatisia, Ftereas (a place name also found in Samos), Lioora, Sori, Kryo Nero, Xylikou, Meyiannika, Aplotaria (the place where figs and grapes are spread out to dry), and others.

Old Christian churches and chapels of Chalandra are those of Agios Kyprianos, Agia Marina, Agioi Saranda, Stavros, Theotokos Despoini, Agios Ioannis, Agios Georgios (Kato Chalandra) and Agios Dimitrios (it was the church of the cemetery of Kato Chalandri). The church of Agios Minas in the current cemetery celebrates on November 11, the anniversary of the liberation of Chios, as does another chapel, that of Agioi Viktori. The parish church (the "village church") of Chalandra is honored in the name of Agia Paraskevi and has a remarkable iconostasis, a masterpiece of 18th-century woodcarving by the best Tinian woodcarver of the time, Nikolaos Kourantzos. According to a Turkish document, the church was repaired in 1754, but it is not the current building, but an older one of smaller dimensions. During the celebration of the church on July 26, a large folk festival is held, but also on a limited scale on October 14, when a local miracle of Agia Paraskevi is honored. The village is ecclesiastically under the archpriestly episcopate of Kourounia of the Holy Metropolis of Chios, Psara and Oinousses.

In Athens, there has been the Association of the Chalandrous-Kaminiotes of Chios "Agia Paraskevi" since 1985, while a corresponding association also exists in the USA.
