Xirokampos (Ξηρόκαμπος) Ilia
Xirokampos is a village in the municipality of Ancient Olympia in the Regional Unit of Ilia with a population of 200 inhabitants, according to the 2011 census.[2] It is approximately 40 km from Pyrgos and 22 km from Ancient Olympia.[3]
Geographical location
Xirokampos is built near the Erymanthos River, on the border with Arcadia. It has an altitude of 344 meters above sea level.
Historical information
The original name of Xirokampos, as attested, was "Fterokampos", from the many ferns that grew there.
Xirokampos as a community was established after the liberation from the Turks, in 1832. Around 1850-1860, the first settlements in Xirokampos were made. The area was now called "Xirokambos", because they did not have enough springs from which they could irrigate this plain.[4]
Economic and social situation
There are four cafes and an olive press in the village. In the center of the village there is the Church of Agia Marina and the old Church of Agia Marina right next to it. There are also seven other churches around the village.
The residents are mainly engaged in agriculture (olive trees, vineyards), but also in livestock farming.
