Ancient Palairos
North of the village and towards Lake Voulkaria, on a rocky hill called "Kehropoula", there are the ruins of ancient Palairos. This is a strategically located site that dominates the area and was close to the well-known Corinthian colonies of Lefkada, Solli and Anaktorio. The area of the city, whose residential structure was organized according to the Hippodamian system, within the fortification is approximately 140 acres, the fortification perimeter has a total length of approximately 2 kilometers and the hill on which its acropolis was built is at an altitude of 230m. - 260m.[3]. The city walls date back to the 2nd millennium BC, while part of them dates back to the Mycenaean period.
Thucydides first mentions Palairo in 431 BC when the Athenians, after conquering it, handed over the Corinthian colony of Sollion, which was located on the Acarnani coast opposite Lefkada. In 389-388 BC Xenophon refers to it, when Agesilaus, at the request of the Achaeans, came to Acarnania and forced the Acarnanians to dissolve their alliance with the Athenians and the Boeotians[4].
Administrative
It was officially mentioned as a settlement in 1897 in the Government Gazette 59B - 17/06/1897 to be annexed to the then municipality of Anaktoria[5]. According to the Kallikrates plan, together with Varko, Pogonia and the islet of Agios Nikolaos they form the Local Community of Pogonia which belongs to the Municipal Unit of Palairos of the Municipality of Aktion - Vonitsa and according to the 2011 census has a population of 30 inhabitants[6].
