Vatos (Βάτος) Aitoloakarnania

Vatos is a mountainous village in Central Greece and the Aitoloakarnania Regional Unit at an altitude of 880 meters[2].

Geographical - Historical information

Vatos is located on a plateau on the western slopes of the Acarnania Mountains, west of the High Peak (1,589 m), which is their highest point. It is 22 km. S.-SE. from Vonitsa and is a livestock settlement with most of its houses abandoned. According to local tradition, the village was created in 1840 by residents of older neighboring settlements (Livadi and Varnaka) who began to build houses closer to their fields and summer pastures[3].

An important religious attraction in the area is the Holy Monastery of Romvos or Panagia Romviotissa, which is dedicated to the Nativity of the Virgin Mary. It is built on the western side of the Acarnania Mountains among rocks overlooking Vatos and the Livadi plateau. According to tradition, it was founded 100 years after the fall of Constantinople and played an important role in the Greek Revolution of 1821[4].

Administrative - population data

It is officially mentioned as a settlement under the name Vato in 1879 in Government Gazette 50A - 25/07/1879 to be annexed to the then municipality of Solli. In 1940 it was corrected to Vatos[5]. According to the Kallikratis plan, it constitutes the Local Community of Vatos, which belongs to the Municipal Unit of Paleros of the Municipality of Aktion - Vonitsa, and according to the 2011 census, 89 residents were registered[6].
