Prokopi (Προκόπι) Evoia
Prokopi is a village in the Municipality of Mantoudio-Limni-Agia Anna on the Chalkida-Edipsos national road. According to the 2011 census, the population of Prokopi is 948.
Historical information
The village was founded in the late 17th century, where according to tradition there were small scattered settlements in the area, while Prokopi was the seat of the Turkish commander from whom the village later took its name and until 1927 it was called "Ahmet Aga".[2]
In 1924, refugees from Prokopi in Cappadocia were transferred and settled in the settlement. Their arrival marked not only the change of the village's name but also its significant population growth and development, as well as its transformation into a pilgrimage destination, since the refugees were the ones who brought the relics of Saint John the Russian from their old homeland.[3]
General information
Prokopi is known for the Church of Saint John the Russian, where the relics of the Saint are kept, which were brought with them in 1924 by Cappadocian refugees from Prokopi (Ürgüp) in Cappadocia, Asia Minor [4]. The Kireas River flows next to the village.
In 2018, the Museum of Asia Minor Culture of Neo Prokopi was inaugurated. It is housed in a two-story building, where the hostel of the Holy Shrine of Saint John the Russian used to operate. The museum houses relics of ecclesiastical and folklore interest, brought by refugees from Prokopi in Cappadocia. The aim is to preserve and highlight ecclesiastical and folklore relics connected to the history of the Prokopians of Cappadocia and their relocation to Prokopi after the Asia Minor Catastrophe, as well as the preservation and dissemination of historical data related to Asia Minor Culture.[5]
