Kalyvia (Καλύβια) Evoia
Kalyvia Mantoudi or Kireos is a lowland village of the Regional Unit of Evoia[2] at an altitude of 93 meters[3].
Geographical data - sights
Kalyvia is located in Northern Evia, at a distance of 19 km. E.-SE. from Limni (seat of the municipality), 9 km. SW. from Mantoudi and 59 km. N.-NE. from Chalkida, between Spathari (NW.) and Troupi (S.). The village is built on the slope of a hill in a verdant area and at its eastern edge the Kalivorema stream passes.
A sight to behold in the village is the plane tree, which according to local tradition is over 400 years old and during the period of Turkish rule the local pasha had dug a seat in the trunk of the tree to gaze at the plain. Its inhabitants are engaged in livestock farming and agriculture in the surrounding fertile fields.[4]
To the west and south, on the slopes of Mount Kantili, between the villages of Dafnona, Kakavo and Spathari, there is a complex of artificial lakes from the former "craters" of white stone mining of the Skalistiris complex. A new ecosystem has been created of wild reeds, oleanders, pines and plane trees as well as many amphibians, reptiles, birds, turtles and fish from the offspring that the inhabitants of the area have spawned.[5]
Administrative details
It is officially mentioned as a settlement, after the Revolution of 1821 and the incorporation of Evia, in 1835 when it was annexed to the then municipality of Nile.[6] According to the program, Kallikratis together with Spathari form the local community of Spathari, which falls under the municipal unit of Kireos of the Municipality of Mantoudio–Limni–Agia Anna and according to the 2011 census has a population of 81 inhabitants[7].
Note
In Evoia and the Municipality of Karystos there is the synonymous settlement of Kalyvia.
