Moni Agiou Markou (Μονή Αγίου Μάρκου) Chios

The Holy Monastery (Skete) of Saint Mark the Evangelist is a male monastery in Chios.

The Monastery is built on Mount Penthodos, about 15 kilometers west of Chios town.

The Monastery follows the Julian calendar (Old).

Historical Facts

The Monastery was founded in 1840 by Monk Parthenios, in a pre-existing, from 1700, ruined church of Saint Mark the Evangelist, near which the Elder asceticized in a cave.

Elder Parthenios beautified the Church of Saint Mark, built cells for the monks, a hostel for pilgrims, dug a well for the monks and with the prayer of Saint Parthenios, water gushed forth, cleaned the tanks, planted trees and vines, and enclosed the area. He died in 1883 and was buried in the narthex of the Catholicon of the Monastery.

Abbot Gabriel, subordinate of Saint Parthenios, enlarged the church with the chapel of Saint Symeon the New Theologian, built the Church of Saint John Chrysostom outside the enclosure, a large hostel, took care of the hagiography workshop and enriched the library.

The Monastery of Saint Mark played an important role in the Liberation of Chios in 1912, with the monks offering their services to the Greek Army. The Monastery's contribution to the care of a large number of refugees during the first persecution of 1914 and during the Asia Minor catastrophe of 1922 was significant.

Today, the tall bell tower is preserved, while around the courtyard of the Monastery are the library, the painting workshop, the cells, and the church with the tomb of the founder, Saint Parthenios, in the narthex, the iconostasis with the icon of Saint Mark dating from around 1873, the chapels, and the relics of the Monastery.

The Holy Monastery follows the Patriarchal, Julian Orthodox calendar.
