Kechries is a village in North Evoia, which belongs to the Municipality of Mantoudio - Limni - Agia Anna, while the seat of the municipality is Limni Evoias. Kechries has an altitude of 157 meters above sea level. According to the 1991 census, the village's inhabitants were 483, while with the 2001 census the inhabitants increased by 21, i.e. 504 permanent residents. In 2011 the census showed 475 permanent residents. The name of the village comes from a plant, which the ancient Greeks used for bread production, millet. It is a village that was habitable during the Protogeometric, Geometric and Classical periods, since a settlement has been found since then a little outside the village.

However, it is a village with several amenities, compared to others where residents find difficulties with transportation, their food and many other things. Something that helps the residents of the village a lot is farming and livestock farming. This village could also be described as an extensive village, since it has several roads, squares and many other areas. Kechries has access to two sides where there is sea. To beaches of the Aegean or North Euboean. Thus, the holiday conditions are suitable. In addition, another beauty of the village is the rich vegetation, which is visible from afar before one even gets there.

Points of interest

One of the first things that one will see if one takes a walk in this village is an old house built among trees, which is known as Konaki. Many people go there because a small playground has been built next to it, but few know that it was the house where the family of Alexis Tombazis lived, a chieftain who contributed to the liberation of Northern Evia in the 18th century.

After the liberation, the governor Ioannis Kapodistrias invited Greeks and foreigners with philhellene feelings to buy land on the island from the Turks, so that the annexation of Evia to the newly established Greek state could take place as soon as possible. Thus, around 1833, Emmanuel Tombazis, who actively participated in the Greek Revolution, acquired land in Kechries, and began to build the building complex at the southern end of the village, in the center of which his mansion dominated. The building is preserved externally, while the interior is in ruins.

There are no other attractions in the area except for the old fountain, which is located just outside the village and was related to a medieval village called Ligota. From there, as Greek mythology states, Erotokritos passed by to drink water after being thirsty due to the war. Thus, many know this fountain as the fountain of Erotokritos, while the locals call it the old fountain.
