Administrative Region : Central Greece
Regional unit : Evoia
Damia (Δαμιά) Evoia
Damia is a semi-mountainous village in northern Evoia and the Regional Unit of Evoia.[2]
Geographical - historical information
Damia is located at the southern foot of Mount Kavallaris at an altitude of 380 meters[3] with a view of northern Evia and the Northern Euboean Gulf. It is 16 km. NW. from Limni (seat of the municipality) and 93 km. NW. from Chalkida.
The date of the village's foundation is not specified, but the area around it belonged to the monastery of Osios David and it is reported that on the site of the current church of the village of Genethliou tis Theotokou there was a women's monastery and that in addition to the nuns, the workers who worked for the monastery lived around it. According to local tradition, it was named after a monk named Damianos who was killed as he was the only one who remained and defended the monastery when it was attacked by the Turks.[3][4] In 1924, after the Asia Minor catastrophe and the exchange of populations, refugees settled in Greece and a large part of the monastery's property was expropriated and distributed to the residents.[4]
The village's residents are engaged in livestock farming, agriculture, beekeeping and resin collection.[5]
Administrative information
It is officially reported, after the Revolution of 1821 and the incorporation of Evoia, in 1835 to be annexed to the then municipality of Aigaion.[6] According to the plan, Kallikratis belongs to the local community of Rovia, which falls under the municipal unit of Elymnion of Mantoudio–Limni–Agia Anna, and according to the 2011 census, 37 residents are listed.[7]
