Chalazoni (Χαλαζόνι) Messinia
Chalazoni[4] or Chalazonion (official name) or Chalazoni (common name), is a settlement near Filiatra and is administratively under the Municipality of Trifylia, in the Prefecture of Messinia.
Location
The village is located approximately 2.5 kilometers east of the intersection, which starts from the national road between Kyparissia and Filiatra,[4] at an altitude of 106[1] meters and is approximately 4 kilometers from the coast of the Ionian Sea. It is approximately 11.5 kilometers from Kyparissia and approximately 4.5 kilometers from Filiatra.
History
According to the official version of the Municipality of Trifylia,[4] the village changed location four (4) times during its history. Its original location was on the Sotiropoulos estate, near Agrilis, but the inhabitants of the village, due to frequent attacks by privateers, were forced to move 200-300 meters above the national road (to the east), near Dipotama. This location is called Kato Chorio. Then, for the same reasons of self-protection, there was a new move to a location 300 meters further south of the current village at the location of Paliochori, while later the final relocation took place and the village was formed, at the location it is located today. There is also a local tradition that the two locations of Kato Chorio and Paliochori were settled at the same time. In the area of the settlement, various remains of older settlements have been preserved, the foundations of the church of Agios Nikolaos and tombs, according to a preliminary excavation carried out by Georgios Syrekelas.[4]
There are various versions of the name of the village. According to a first version, it may come from the words "kali + zona" (either in the sense of protection from pirates, or in the sense of a prosperous area) which were corrupted and became "Chalazoni > Chalazoni", while according to a second version, it may come from the words "khalasmeni + zona" (due to changes in location) and finally, according to a third version, it may come from the surname of a resident named "Chalazonitis".[4]
The oldest name of the village was Chalazonion, but it has also been referred to as Chalazonion since at least 1835.[5][6] However, the village is found with similar names in earlier bibliographic sources-references. The settlement is mentioned in various censuses of the Venetian Pronoites of the Serene Republic of Venice, which were made during the thirty-year period (1683/84-1715), during which the Venetians occupied the Peloponnese. In 1689, Calazonion (Calasoni) belonged to the province of Arcadia (or Arcadia, i.e. the area of today's Kyparissia), which was one of the 4 provinces into which the Methoni district was then divided (Phanari province, Arcadia province, Navarino province and Methoni province).[7] The settlement of Calazonion was annexed to the old Municipality of Eranis in 1835.[8] Chalazoni is mentioned in 1853 in the second volume of "Hellenic" by Iakovos Rizos Ragavis as a village in the Municipality of Erani in the Province of Trifylia with a population of 119 inhabitants, based on the 1851 census.[9] In 1899 it was transferred from the Prefecture of Messinia and became part of the Prefecture of Trifylia,[10] for about a decade, until 1909, when it returned to the Prefecture of Messinia,[11] as a settlement in the Province of Trifylia. In 1912 it was separated from the Municipality of Eranis and designated as the seat of the Community of Chalazoni,[12][13] which also included the settlement of Kanaloupou, which remained until 1919,[14] which was separated from the community and designated as the seat of the Community of Kanaloupou (later, in 1956, the settlement and the community of Kanaloupou were renamed Plati and the Community of Plati, respectively). Chalazoni remained the seat of the homonymous community, from 1912 to 1997, when then, in the context of the changes that occurred in the local government, through the "Kapodistrias" plan, it was subordinated to the abolished Municipality of Filiatra,[15] until 2010. Since 2011, after the new changes of the "Kallikratis" plan, it now belongs to the new Municipality of Trifylia.[4][16] This municipality was established with the Kallikrates Program by merging the pre-existing municipalities of Aetos, Avlonos, Gargaliana, Kyparissia, Filiatra and the community of Tripyla.
Residents
The settlement, based on the 2011 census, has 154 permanent residents, who are employed in various agricultural activities.

Buildings and sights
In addition to the houses, there is the old primary school, which houses the office of the Local Council and the Rural Clinic, the old community building and the two traditional cafes, in the central square, where the old plane tree of the village is located.[32] The church of the village is the Church of Agios Georgios, while the renovated chapel of Sotiros (Agia Sotira) to the north of the village, which belong to the Holy Metropolis of Trifylia and Olympia, is also worth visiting. The sights of the settlement include, to the north, in the area of the Desi stream and the road to Mesorachia, the remains of the Chalazoni watermills (Chronis Watermills), which operated in the summer only at night, with water coming from Kanaloupou, while the Chalazoni plain was subsequently irrigated with the same water. To the south, towards the Skatelos stream and between the new and old villages, is the old well, from which water was drawn by the village residents, until approximately 1885, when the Chalazoni reservoir was constructed.[4] The "Association of the People of Apantachos Chalazoni" also has its headquarters in the village.[32]

The president of the Chalazoni Community "passed away", he was recovered on November 28, 2021.
Sources
The censuses of the Pronoites of the Serene Republic of Venice, Corner (1689), Grimani (1700) Angelo Emo (perhaps 1708), the undated census mentioned in the Querini-Stampalia manuscript (perhaps 1711), are four of the various Venetian censuses, which were attempted during the thirty-year period (1683/84-1715), during which the Venetians occupied the Peloponnese. To date, only the Grimani census has been fully published, by the historian and emeritus director of research of the National Research Foundation (NRF) Vassilis Panagiotopoulos, in his work "Population and settlements of the Peloponnese. 13th - 18th century", (1985).
