Askyra is an uninhabited mountain settlement in Thrace in the Regional Unit of Xanthi.[1][2]

Geography - History

Askyra is located towards the border with the Regional Unit of Rodopi at an altitude of 678 meters[3], at a distance of 24 km. NE. from Xanthi. The village culturally belongs to the Pomak villages[4], its houses have the characteristics of their traditional architecture[5] and are known for their musical tradition. It is considered one of the recently abandoned mountain settlements of Xanthi[2] whose Pomak inhabitants gradually moved and who return in the summer months.[6] In 1973 it was recorded that there were approximately 25 houses and 25 families of villagers, in 1951 555 inhabitants were registered (including the surrounding smaller settlements) while in 1971 there were 164 inhabitants and in 1991 only 22.[7] During the period of Turkish rule it was referred to as Kara-Ulan and belonged from 1878 to 1912 to the vilayet of Adrianople, the sanjak of Gioumoultzina (Komotini) and the kaza of Xanthi.[8] It was officially referred to as Askyra after the liberation of Thrace in 1924 in the Government Gazette 194A - 14/08/1924 to be annexed to the then community of Cimmeria. In 1940 its name was corrected to Askira.[9] According to the "Kallikratis" Program, it belongs to the municipal community of Kimmeria, which falls under the municipal unit of Xanthi of the Municipality of Xanthi, and according to the 2011 census, it has no permanent residents.[10]
