Ano Rodakino (Άνω Ροδάκινον ) Rethymno
Ano Rodakino (official: Ανω Ροδακινον) is a village and the seat of the Community of Rodakino in the Municipality of Agios Vasilios, in the Regional Unit of Rethymno, Crete. It is 43 kilometres (27 mi) from Rethymno and is built at an altitude of 220 metres (730 ft).[2]

Etymology
It is not known where the village got its name from. The first version states that the area was dry and the fact that a peach tree grew there made a great impression and was reflected in the toponym. The second version states that the horizon of the village is shaped like a peach. A third version states that it comes from the rosy-red color of the skin of the inhabitants due to the Sun. Another version states that the name comes from the ancient toponym Rikinthos, which referred to the torrent that forms the gorge between Ano and Kato Rodakino.[3] Stergios Spanakis points out that the surname Rodakinos is recorded in 14th-century contracts in Crete, and thus the name of the village may derive from the surname of the first settlers.[2]
Historical evidence
Remains of a Minoan settlement have been excavated at the site of Kastellos.[4] It is not known when the two villages were built. In their place there were previously the villages of Kourkoulos, Palio Chorio, Panagia and Ai-Lias, which were probably destroyed in the early years of the Turkish occupation or by pirates. According to tradition, Rodakino was settled by an old resident of the area who had fled to Mani around 1600 and returned with his children and built the village.[3] The village is listed in the Ottoman census of 1659 as Rodakino, with 26 houses.[2]
In the 1834 census, which was organized by the Egyptians, the village is listed as Rodakino (meaning the Upper and Lower together) and had a purely Christian population and 45 families living there.[2] In the 1881 census, Rodakino was part of the municipality of Foinikos and had a purely Christian population of 376 inhabitants. In the 1900 census, it had 468 inhabitants. In the 1920 census, Ano and Kato Rodakino were listed separately for the first time, with Ano Rodakino serving as the seat of the rural municipality of Rodakino.[2] In 1925, Ano Rodakino was designated as the seat of the community of Rodakino. In 1940 the two villages were listed in the census as one, under the name Rodakino, but since 1951 they have been separate settlements again. The community of Rodakino was preserved until the Kapodistrian administrative division, when the village was annexed to the Municipality of Finikas.[5]

During World War II, Allied ships and submarines were moored in the bay south of the village, which transported munitions to the guerrillas. After the murder of a German, the Germans proceeded on 20 August 1943 to burn Rodakino and execute the inhabitants of Rodakino.[3]

Points of interest
The main church of the village is the two-aisled church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary and the Transfiguration of the Savior. The church of Saint Panteleimon is also located in the village. The churches date from the early 19th century.[3] There is a stone bridge between Upper and Lower Rodakino. The bridge was built in 1908 and its cost was estimated at 5,900 drachmas. The bridge was designed to be 4 meters wide and 6 meters wide. The bridge carried traffic to Sfakia until 2013, when a new bridge was opened.[6]
On the road between Ano and Kato Rodakino there is a junction to the beaches of the area, such as Korakas beach, Polyrizos beach and Agia Marina beach, which is the longest.[3]
