General and historical information
Agora is located in the northeast of the Drama plain and the western foothills of the Lekanis Mountains at an altitude of 260 meters[2]. It is 18 km. NE. from Kalampaki (municipal seat) and 16 km. The inhabitants of the village are engaged in agriculture, mainly in the cultivation of vineyards and the production of wine, which has a "Protected Geographical Indication" - PGI.[3] On the south side there is the Park of Diurnal and Nocturnal Birds of Prey which is accessible to people with disabilities.[4]
During the Ottoman Empire, it was called Pazarlar and its Muslim inhabitants moved to Turkey after the Asia Minor Catastrophe and the population exchange, while 72 refugee families (130 people) came and settled in the village.[5] Thus, it is officially mentioned in 1919 in the Government Gazette 251A - 20/11/1919 that it was annexed to the then community of Kiria. In 1927, with the Government Gazette 76A - 02/05/1927, it was renamed Agora.[6] According to the "Kallikratis" Program, it is the local community of Agora, which falls under the municipal unit of Doxatos of the Municipality of Doxatos and according to the 2021 census, it had a population of 101 residents.[7] The local community is characterized as a rural semi-mountainous settlement, with an area of 12.779 km² (2011).[8]
