Pontokerasea (Ποντοκερασέα) Kilkis
Pontokerasia, officially Pontokerasea, is a settlement in Central Macedonia and the Kilkis Regional Unit.[1]
Geographical - historical information
Pontokerasia is located on the borders of the Kilkis prefecture with the Serres prefecture, on the southern slopes of Mount Mavrovouni (part of the Kroussia Mountains) at an altitude of 640 meters[1] and south of Lake Kerkini. The village is approximately 32 km NE of the city of Kilkis and 77 km NNE of Thessaloniki. After the Balkan Wars and the population exchange, the Refugee Resettlement Committee (RAP) settled 104 refugee families (348 people) from Pontus[2].
Its name comes from its Pontic inhabitants, who settled in 1920–1922 from the Caucasus, Trebizond and Kerasounta regions, and the many cherry trees they cultivated there. The old name of the village was Paprat[3] which means "fern" and they are abundant in the area. The inhabitants of the village are mainly engaged in logging and less in agriculture[4]. To the north of Pontokerasia, in an area adjacent to the "Natura2000" protected area, is the Balkan Botanical Garden of Kroussia (BBKK) on an area of 310 acres, of which 150 are covered with forest, mainly oak, and the rest are home to collections of endemic plants[5].
According to the official history of the DIS/GES, the guerrillas were pursued and suffered losses, abandoning part of the looted material. Skantzelis and 17 deserters were also arrested later. Another 14 villagers and two men from the company were sentenced to life imprisonment. In August 1946, the military court of Kilkis sentenced Skantzelis, the village teacher, five soldiers and five villagers to death and executed.
Administrative information
The village is officially referred to by its old name from the Turkish occupation in 1919 in the Government Gazette 48A-05/03/1919, designating it as the seat of the then Paprat community, which belonged to the prefecture of Thessaloniki. In 1927 it was renamed Pontokerasia, in 1934 it was transferred to the newly established prefecture of Kilkis and in 1940 it was corrected to Pontokerasia[6]. According to the Kallikratis program, together with Parochthio it forms the municipal community of Pontokerasia which belongs to the municipal unit of Kroussa of the municipality of Kilkis and according to the 2021 census as a community it has a population of 109 inhabitants, while as a settlement 75[7].
