Michalitsi (Μιχαλίτσι) Ioannina
Michalitsi is a mountainous village in the municipality of North Tzoumerka, Epirus region, forty kilometers from the city of Ioannina.
Geographical information
To the east, it is separated from Prosilio and Pramanta by the tributary of the Arachthos, "Kalarrytikos". To the west of the village are Baptistis and Chouliarades, while to the north is Paleochori.
The village is quite sparsely populated and its northern and southern ends are six kilometers apart, while its two large squares are 2,800 meters apart. It is entirely crossed by the large valley of Lesia, which receives five springs in total and flows into the Kalarritikos.[1]
Water supply
The village has many scattered natural springs. The needs of the residents were served by these until the 1960s, and then natural springs, located at higher altitudes, were gradually exploited, and 4 aqueducts were constructed.
Occupations of residents
Until the 1960s, Michalitsi was a village of craftsmen.
Population - composition
The population of Michalitsi in the 1950s-60s was quite large and the village was ranked as the second largest in Tzoumerka behind Pramanta. In recent years, the majority of residents live in Ioannina. However, the number of residents is 1066, while the number of registered voters is 812, but the number of permanent residents is approximately 150 [citation pending].

Historical information
Pre-Christian period
It is certain that this area was inhabited from a very long time ago. The church of All Saints is built on the base of a pre-Christian building and it is possible that there was a fortified acropolis at this point. This area also occupied the English philhellene Hammond, professor of Greek at the University of Bristol
Roman and Byzantine period
Mihalitsi is located on the roads leading to the Pindos passes. These passes were used to communicate between Epirus and Thessaly and Roman troops moved through them. The toponyms "Caesar" and "Frag" are related to this period[citation needed].
Ottoman rule
The old village called "Mihalitsiotoupoli" (as it was written in the sultan's papers)[citation needed] had 400 families, was densely populated, overgrown with forests, all soil without stones and ravines. However, the plague of the time struck Michalitsiotoupoli in 1656 and most of the inhabitants died. The few who survived abandoned the village and the place remained deserted and uninhabited. The ruins of Michalitsiotoupoli still exist today. It had 2 two-story houses and all the others were ground floors, all of course made of stone.
Education - culture
Ecclesiologically, the village belongs to the Metropolis of Ioannina. In 1972, the Brotherhood of Michalitsio Agios Nikolaos was founded, which developed great activity by purchasing offices and in 1985 published the magazine "The Voice of Michalitsio", began the organization of a folklore museum and a lending library, achieved the declaration of the church of All Saints as a preserved monument, organizes carnival areas and other cultural and recreational activities and has operated a traditional dance school since 1985.
In 1987, the football club <AJAX Michalitsi> was founded, which reached the B' amateur division, but due to financial problems it no longer exists.[2]
