Vaptistis (Βαπτιστής) Ioannina
Vaptistis (formerly Goura Chouliaradon[1], Goura and Vaptistis Ioannis[2]) is a mountainous village in the municipality of North Tzoumerka, Ioannina prefecture. According to the 2011 census, its population is 146 permanent residents.
General and historical information
Vaptistis is built on a slope of Mount Lapata of Tzoumerka, at an altitude of 880 meters, in a ravine that separates the heights of Kakouri and Korouna near the tributary of the Arachthos, Kalarritiko. It is 35 kilometers from the city of Ioannina. It is surrounded by forests, ravines, cliffs and to the east is the peak of Katarrachia of Tzoumerka, with an altitude of 2,280 m.
Historically, until the end of the Ottoman Empire, Vaptistis was not recognized as an autonomous village, but as a settlement of the neighboring Chouliarades[3]. Like the remaining 14 of Tzoumerka located on the left bank of the Arachthos, it was annexed to Greece during the First Balkan War[1] and in the census that followed by the Greek authorities it was registered as an independent settlement[3].
Administratively, it was a settlement of the province of Dodoni until 1997. Initially, it belonged to the community of Chouliarades[2], from which it was later detached to become the seat of the homonymous community[4], while it was subsequently subordinated to the municipality of Tzoumerka[2]. Since 2011, it has belonged to the Kallikratis municipality of Northern Tzoumerka. Its few permanent residents are mainly engaged in poultry farming.
