Leivathos (Λειβαθός) is a former municipality on the island of Kefalonia, Ionian Islands, Greece. Since the 2011 local government reform it is part of the municipality Kefalonia, of which it is a municipal unit.[1] It lies south of Argostoli, on the central south coast of the island, and has a land area of 62.626 km² and a population of 4,663 (2001 census). Its largest towns are Svoronáta (pop. 674), Vlacháta (578), Peratáta (505), and Metaxáta (493).

Lakithra

Lakithra, Mycenaean Graves

Lakithra is a village, known from the Mycenaen graves which were discovered in the region. Also the so-called Rock of Lord Byron is in the region named after the known poet who was in the region in 1823.

Metaxata

Metaxata was named after the Byzantinian Markantonio Metaxa after the Fall of Constantinople. Before its name was Fratzata.

  • Andreas and Konstantinos Metaxas, freedom fighters
  • Lord Byron who spent some time in the village. A sculpture of Byron is in the central square of Metaxata.
