Kamari (Καμάρι) Messinia
Kamari[4] officially referred to as Kamarion, is a settlement near Aetos and administratively falls under the Municipality of Trifylia, Messinia Prefecture.
Location
Kamari is located approximately 19.5 kilometres northeast of Kyparissia and approximately 14.5 kilometres northwest of Aetos. It has an altitude of 215[1] metres and is approximately 15 kilometres from the coast of the Ionian Sea. Kamari is located northwest of Kopanaki, from which it is approximately 4.5 kilometres away, between the villages of Glykorrizi to its southwest and Nea Agrilia to its southeast, from which it is approximately 1 kilometre and 2.5 kilometres away respectively.
History
Kamari was annexed to the old Municipality of Avlonos in 1897.[5][6][7] In 1899 the village was transferred from the Prefecture of Messinia and became part of the Prefecture of Trifylia,[8] for about a decade, until 1909, when it returned to the Prefecture of Messinia,[9] as a settlement of the District of Trifylia. In 1912 Kamari was annexed to the Community of Pitsia,[10][11] with the village of Pitsia as its seat, which, in 1927,[12] was renamed Sitochorion and the community to the Community of Sitochori. Since 1907, Kamari has been officially referred to, according to the corresponding census, as Kamari Pitsa, a name that remains until 1928 when the village is officially referred to as Kamari Sitochori and the community as the Community of Kamari Sitochori, according to the 1928 census. In 1931[13] Kamari is formally separated from the Community of Sitochori and is designated as the seat of the homonymous Community of Kamari.[14] From 1940 to the present, the village is officially referred to as Kamarion. The village remained the seat of the homonymous community from 1928 to 1997, when, as part of the changes that occurred in local government, through the "Kapodistrias" plan, Kamarion was subordinated to the abolished Municipality of Aetos Messinia,[15][16] until 2010. Since 2011, after the new changes of the "Kallikratis" plan, Kamarion now belongs to the new Municipality of Trifylia.[4][17] This municipality was established with the Kallikratis Program by merging the pre-existing municipalities of Aetos, Avlonos, Gargaliana, Kyparissia, Filiatra and the community of Tripyla. Kamarion is today the seat and the only settlement of the Local Community of Kamarion of the Municipality of Trifylia.[4]
Residents
The settlement, based on the 2011 census, has 41 permanent residents, who are mainly employed in various agricultural tasks.
