Kefalovrysi (Κεφαλόβρυση) Messinia

Kefalovrysi[4], formerly known as Ripesi, is a mountainous settlement near Aetos and administratively under the Municipality of Trifylia, in the Prefecture of Messinia.

Location

Kefalovrysi is located approximately 25.5 kilometers northeast of Kyparissia and approximately 14 kilometers north of Aetos. It has an altitude of 517[1] meters and is approximately 25.5 kilometers from the coast of the Ionian Sea. Kefalovrysi is located north of Kopanaki, from which it is approximately 7 kilometers away. It is also located near the villages of Avlon, Sitochori and Sidirokastron.[5]

History

The village has a long history that follows the history of Trifylia and the wider area of Aetos. Ripesi was inhabited in the late 14th century mainly by Arvanites.[5] There are two versions of the original name of the village, which was preserved until 1927, according to local tradition: The first version suggests that the name came from the tsarouchia (in Arvanite "ripe") that a shepherd hung on a tree so as not to lose the place where he found water.[5] The second version states that the first settlers of the village probably came from the homonymous village of Ripesi in Filiates, Epirus.[5] The more recent name of the village as Kefalovrysi comes from the large stone fountain, with its three taps, which flow cold water and which is located in the central square of the village, near the centuries-old plane tree that was planted there in 1857.[5]

Venetian rule

During the Venetian rule, it was referred to as Ripessi. The settlement is also mentioned in various censuses of the Venetian Pronoites of the Serene Republic of Venice, which were made during the thirty-year period (1683/84-1715), during which the Venetians occupied the Peloponnese.[6] The village of Ripessi belonged, in 1689, to the province of Arcadia (or Arcadia, i.e. the area of present-day Kyparissia), which was one of the 4 provinces into which the Methoni district was then divided (Phanariou province, Arcadia province, Navarinou province and Methoni province).[7]

Recent history

Ripesi or Repesi, according to other sources-reports, was initially annexed to the old Municipality of Dorio in 1835.[8][9][10] Shortly afterwards in 1840,[11] it was detached from it and annexed to the old Municipality of Avlonos,[12] where it remained until 1912, when this municipality was abolished. The village is mentioned, in 1853, also as Ripesi in the second volume of "Hellenic" by Iakovos Rizos Ragavis, as a village of the Municipality of Avlonos of the Triphylia District with a population of 344 inhabitants, based on the 1851 census.[13] The seat of the Municipality of Avlonos at that time, based on the same source, was the village of Sidirokastro. In 1899 the village was transferred from the Prefecture of Messinia and became part of the Prefecture of Trifylia,[14] for about a decade, until 1909, when it returned to the Prefecture of Messinia,[15] as a settlement of the District of Trifylia. In 1912 Ripesi was annexed and became the seat of the Community of Ripesi,[16][17] while in 1927 the settlement and the community were renamed Kefalovrysi and the Community of Kefalovrysi respectively.[18] In 1961 the settlements of Tsertsaiika and Kotsanion were also recognized and annexed to the Community of Kefalovrysi.[19] In the 1961 census, the Community of Kefalovrysa had a total of 364 permanent residents, of which Kefalovrysa had 334, Kotsanion had 5 and Tsertsaiika had 25 permanent residents respectively. A few years later, in 1971, the settlement of Kotsanion was abolished.[20] The village remained the seat of the homonymous community (with changes in the name of the village and the community), from 1912 to 1997, when then, within the framework of the changes that occurred in the local government, through the "Kapodistrias" plan, Kefalovrysi and Tsertsaiika were subordinated to the abolished Municipality of Aetos Messinias,[21][22] until 2010. Since 2011, after the new changes of the "Kallikratis" plan, Kefalovrysi now belongs to the new Municipality of Trifylia.[4][23] This municipality was established with the Kallikratis Program by merging the pre-existing municipalities of Aetos, Avlonos, Gargaliana, Kyparissia, Filiatra and the community of Tripyla. Kefalovrysi is today the seat of the Local Community of Kefalovrysi of the Municipality of Trifylia,[4] to which the settlement of Tsertsaiika also belongs.

Residents

The settlement, based on the 2011 census, has 88 permanent residents, who are mainly employed in various agricultural activities.

Buildings - events

In addition to the traditional houses, among which there are two-story stone mansions, there is the central square with the centuries-old plane tree and the large stone fountain, the "Kefalovrisos" or "Megali Vrisi", built in 1905. Around the square are the village cafes.[5] The village church is the Church of Agios Nikolaos, which was built in 1853 and belongs to the Holy Metropolis of Trifylia and Olympia. The "Association of the People of Apantachos Ripesaion" also organizes various cultural events in the village.

The censuses of the Pronoites of the Serene Republic of Venice, Corner (1689), Grimani (1700) Angelo Emo (perhaps 1708), the undated census mentioned in the Querini-Stampalia manuscript (perhaps 1711), are four of the various Venetian censuses, which were attempted during the thirty-year period (1683/84-1715), during which the Venetians occupied the Peloponnese. To date, only the Grimani census has been fully published, by the historian and emeritus director of research of the National Research Foundation (NRF) Vassilis Panagiotopoulos, in his work "Population and settlements of the Peloponnese. 13th - 18th century", (1985).
