Iliokali (Ηλιόκαλη) Ioannina
Fourteen kilometers from the city of Ioannina, at the foot of Driscos, between the communities of Platanias and Drosochori and at an altitude of 600 meters, is the village Iliokali one of the so-called Kambochoria .
The village spreads over an area of 3,300 acres and is built in a dense forest, with many green trees and bushes, and many springs with natural water.
History says that the village existed since ancient times as a settlement called Mourkious, and that it was inhabited by Turks, hence the name. On May 2, 1927, the settlement of Mourkious was renamed the Community of Iliokali, taking this name from the monastery of Iliokali, which is located in the area.
The residents are mainly engaged in agriculture and livestock farming, but also in construction work. The village produces many livestock products, and the authentic tsipouro is famous in the area, which is made in the old traditional way and whose distillation continues to be a great celebration for the residents, in which all the relatives and friends of each producer participate. This celebration is of course accompanied by many traditional snacks.
The central church of Agia Paraskevi, with its imposing presence, is celebrated on July 26th every year with cultural events. On the outskirts of the village, the 2 chapels of Agios Georgios and Zoodochos Pigi also dominate. The village still has the old and preserved primary school that was built in 1913, although it is still waiting for a subsidy from the Ministry of Culture for its maintenance. It operated until 1987, when the new primary school was built.
The Iliokali Cultural Association is also active and has a great social impact. With the great participation of the elderly of the village, the Senior Citizens' Center (KAPI) was founded a few years ago, with great intervention in the local community. The founder of the center is the late Theoharis Tsionis.
The local team, P.A.O. Iliokali, is also in the B' Amateur Category.
On December 4, 1997, the community of Iliokali merged with the newly created Municipality of Pamvotida. The President of the local Community of Iliokali is Georgios I. Bitas.
The village is full of life, although many residents of the village have emigrated abroad and to other regions of Greece. The people of Iliokali are very attached to the customs and traditions of their place.
