Chomatada (Χωματάδα) Messinia

Chomatada,[4] formerly referred to as Chomatades, is a settlement near Pylos and administratively falls under the Municipality of Pylos - Nestor, in the Prefecture of Messinia.

Location

Chomatada is located approximately 10.5 kilometers southeast of Pylos, approximately 12 kilometers northeast of Methoni and approximately 33 kilometers northwest of Koroni. It has an altitude of 168[1] meters and is approximately 8 kilometers from the coast of the Ionian Sea and approximately 20 kilometers from the Messinian Gulf. Near Chomatada, to its east, is Kallithea at a distance of approximately 3 kilometers, to its south are Perivolakia at a distance of approximately 3 kilometers as well, to its west is Pidasos at a distance of approximately 2.5 kilometers and to its northwest are Vozikeika and Kynigos at a distance of approximately 5 and 6 kilometers respectively.[5]

History

The village has a long history that follows the history of Messinia, Methoni and the wider region of Pylia. The area of the settlement, in antiquity, was part of the kingdom of Nestor, ancient Pylos.

2nd Venetian rule
Main article: Territory of Methoni

During the 2nd Venetian rule it was referred to as Chomatada (Comatala[6] or Gomatadha[7]). The settlement is also mentioned in various censuses of the Venetian Pronoites of the Serene Republic of Venice, which were made during the thirty-year period (1683/84-1715), during which the Venetians occupied the Peloponnese. The village of Gomatada (Gomatadha), belonged, in 1689, to the province of Methoni (Territorio di Modon), which was one of the 4 provinces into which the Methoni district was then divided (Phanariou province, Arcadia province, Navarinou province and Methoni province). Based on the Venetian Corner census of 1689, the village had 2 inhabitants.[7] At times, the village is also referred to in various bibliographic sources as Chomatades.

Administrative history

Homatades was initially annexed to the old Municipality of Pidassos in 1835.[8][9][10][11] Just 5 years later, in 1840,[12] the settlement was detached from the Municipality of Pidassos and annexed to the old Municipality of Methoni,[13] where it remained until 1912 when the municipality was abolished. The village is mentioned, in 1853, also as Homatades in the second volume of "Hellenic" by Iakovos Rizos Ragavis, as a village of the Municipality of Methoni in the District of Pylia with a population of 53 inhabitants, based on the 1851 census.[14] The seat of the Municipality of Methoni at that time, based on the same source, was the town of Methoni. The village was referred to as Chomatades from its official recognition in 1835 until 1879. Based on its mention in the 1879 census, from then until 1927 it was referred to as Chomatada. In 1912, Chomatada was annexed to the Community of Memerizi,[15][16] with its seat in Memerizi (today Kallithea). The settlements of Arapolakka, Daouti (abolished in 1920 and the newer settlement of Daouti, which succeeded it, was renamed in 1928 to Perivolakia) and Gamos (abolished in 1940) were also annexed to the Community of Memerizi. In 1927[17] Chomatades was separated from the Community of Memerizi (since 1928 this community and the village of Memerizi were renamed the Community of Kallithea and Kallithea respectively) and was designated the seat of the Community of Chomatades.[18] From 1927 to 1940 the village was officially referred to, with its original name, as Chomatades and its community as the Community of Chomatades, while from 1940 until today its official name is again Chomatada. The settlement of Perivolakia, which was separated from the Community of Evangelismos, was annexed to the Community of Chomatades in 1970[19]. The village remained as a settlement of the homonymous community from 1927 to 1997, when then, within the framework of the changes that occurred in the local government, through the "Kapodistrias" plan, Chomatada and Perivolakia were subordinated to the abolished Municipality of Pylos,[20][21] until 2010. Since 2011, after the new changes of the "Kallikratis" plan, Chomatada now belongs to the new Municipality of Pylos - Nestor.[22][23] This municipality was established with the Kallikratis Program by merging the pre-existing municipalities of Koroni, Methoni, Papaflessa, Pylos, Nestor and Chiliochoria. Chomatada is today the seat of the Local Community of Chomatada of the Municipality of Pylos-Nestor,[4] which also includes the settlement of Perivolakia.

Residents

The settlement, based on the 2021 census, has 221 permanent residents, who are mainly employed in various agricultural tasks. In the summer and Easter, it exceeds 280 residents. Actress Sofia Panagou[24] is from Chomatada.

The censuses of the Pronoites of the Serene Republic of Venice, Corner (1689), Grimani (1700) Angelo Emo (perhaps 1708), the undated census mentioned in the Querini-Stampalia manuscript (perhaps 1711), are four of the various Venetian censuses, which were attempted during the thirty-year period (1683/84-1715), during which the Venetians occupied the Peloponnese. To date, only the Grimani census has been fully published, by the historian and emeritus director of research of the National Research Foundation (NRF) Vassilis Panagiotopoulos, in his work "Population and settlements of the Peloponnese. 13th - 18th century", (1985).
