Chandras (Χανδράς) Lasithi
Chandras (or Chantras) is a village and the seat of the homonymous community of the municipality of Sitia in the Lassithi Regional Unit of Crete.[1]
Geographical information
Chandras is built at an altitude of 580 meters[2], about 30 kilometers south of Sitia. It is located on the northeastern edge of a small plateau, on which the settlement of Armeni is also located, and for this reason it is known as Armenochantrades. About 2 kilometers northeast of Chandras is the abandoned medieval settlement of Voila.[3]
Historical information
Chandras was probably created during the Arab or Saracen period. The name Chantras is considered to have Arabic origin and means green, in reference to the plateau. It is mentioned by Francesco Barocci in 1577 as Ghandra and in the 1583 census of the Castrofilakas, where it is mentioned as Candrà, it had 403 inhabitants. In the 1834 census it is mentioned as Khandra with 22 Christian and 7 Turkish families and in the 1881 census Chandras with 458 Christian inhabitants and 29 Turks.

See: Community of Chandras Chandras is officially mentioned, after the union of Crete with Greece, in 1925 in the Government Gazette 27A - 31/01/1925, as the seat of the newly founded community of the same name.[5] According to the Kallikrates plan and the amendment of Cleisthenes I, together with the settlements of Agios Panteleimonas and Katelionas, it forms the community of Chandra, which falls under the municipal unit of Lefki in the municipality of Sitia, while according to the 2011 census it has 226 permanent residents.[6][7]
Points of interest
In the central part of the village, the old core, known as "Mesochoria", are the churches of Agios Dimitrios and the Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary. In this part of the settlement there was an Ottoman hammam, the remains of which are preserved, a Renaissance fountain and buildings with Venetian influences. The village houses a folklore museum. In the northern part of the settlement is the church of Agios Charalambos, with a neoclassical bell tower.[8]
A short distance away is the ancient village of Voila, abandoned today, which preserves monuments from the Venetian and Ottoman eras.
