Agios Dimitrios (Άγιος Δημήτριος) Trikala

Agios Dimitrios is a village in the local community of Gavros, in the municipal unit (former municipality) of Chassia, in the municipality of Kalambaka, in the regional unit (former prefecture) of Trikala, in the region of Thessaly, according to the Kallikratis program.[2][3] Before the Kapodistrias plan and the Kallikratis program, it belonged to the Kalambaka district of the Trikala prefecture, in the geographical department of Thessaly.[4][5]

Until 1974, the settlement was called Tsiougouro (Tsougouro).[3][4][5]

Geographical information

Agios Dimitrios is a semi-mountainous settlement in the northern part of the prefecture of Trikala, at the western foothills of Antichasia. It is located near the eastern bank of the Mykanis River and east of the Servia-Elati provincial road (E 15), at an average altitude of 350 meters. It is approximately 38 km NW of Trikala.[4][5][6][7]

Administrative changes until "Kallikratis"

The settlement was recognized in 1883 as Tsiougouro (Tsougouro) and was annexed to the municipality of Oxynia. In 1974 it was renamed Agios Dimitrios and in 1994 it was annexed to the municipality of Chassion. With the Government Gazette 87A - 07/06/2010 it was detached from the municipality of Hasion and annexed to the municipality of Kalambaka.[3]

Customs

During the celebration of Zoodochos Pigi in the homonymous chapel, the "Hanging of the Handkerchiefs" takes place in the monastery of Panagia Zoodochos Pigi at the "Mantili" location. Local climbers climb the characteristic "meteoric"-type rock and change the handkerchiefs that had been hung there in a recess, as vows to the Virgin Mary. This custom takes place every year and exists throughout the Meteora region, the date simply changes depending on the location.[11]
