Agiasma (Αγίασμα) Kavala

Agiasma (until 1926 Kouri[1] or Kouri Houmaioun[2]) is a village in the Municipality of Nestos, in the regional unit of Kavala, in the region of Eastern Macedonia and Thrace.

It is located in the Nestos plain. Three kilometers from Agiasma is the Kavala State Airport "Alexander the Great".

According to the 2021 census, it had 750 residents, down from 843 in 2011[3]. The local community of Agiasma also includes the settlement of Paralia Agiasma[4], with 20 residents (2011). The local community is characterized as a rural lowland settlement, with an area of ​​28.745 km² (2011) and an average elevation of 2.[5]

History

Agiasma at the beginning of the 20th century had a Muslim population[2] (220 inhabitants according to the statistics of the Greek army and 335 according to the population census of 1913). After the population exchange, 99 refugee families settled in Agiasma, a total of 393 people, with the village acquiring a refugee character.[8] According to the 1928 census, it had 411 residents, while its population increased to 685 residents in the 1940 census[2].

Agiasma was designated the seat of the Agiasma community in 1927 and with the Kapodistrias program it was incorporated into the municipality of Keramoti.[4]

Sights

Important buildings in the village are the church of Agios Georgios and the stone chapel of Agios Ioannis Prodromos on the common crossing from Agiasma to Keramoti and Thassos[9].

Near the village there is also a football field for the Macedonian Agiasma team! [9]
