Aetos (Αετός) Evoia

Aetos is a settlement in Evia. It is the seat of the homonymous local community, the municipal community and municipality of Karystos, of the regional unit (former prefecture) of Evia, in the region of Central Greece.[2][3]

The local community of Aetos also includes the settlements of Akrotiri, Metochi and Bouros. Previously, Aetos belonged to the province of Karystia of the prefecture of Evia, in the geographical department of Central Greece.[4][5]

The settlement is divided into Kato Aetos, where the services of the local community are located, and Ano Aetos with most of the churches and other attractions.

Geographical information

Aetos is located in N. Evia, 2 km. E.NE. of Karystos, at an altitude of 40. The homonymous local community is characterized as a rural semi-mountainous settlement, with an area of 27.925 km².[6][7][8]
Geological data

Since ancient times, the wider area of Karystos has been known for the famous greenish-white marble with emerald green veins, the "Karystos and Styria stone" (cipollino "onion") which was quarried from Stira to the western foothills of Mount Ochi. It was named cipollino, because its alternating white and green bands resemble overlapping onion skins. This marble was used mainly in the Roman era, during which its demand was very high, mostly in the form of large monoliths, some of which are preserved in the area northwest of Aetos.[9]
