Vresto (Βρεστό) Ilia

Vresto is a mountainous village in the Peloponnese in the Regional Unit of Ilia.[1]

Geographical - Historical information

Vresto is located towards the border with the Regional Unit of Messinia and at the northern foot of Mount Minthi at an altitude of 544 meters[2]. It is 41 km. SE. from Krestena and 21 km. W.-NW. from Andritsaina. East of the village, on the hill of Gardiki, there are ruins of an acropolis with walls and cemeteries of an ancient city, which have been declared an archaeological site.[3] It was one of the villages that was greatly affected by the deadly fires of Ilia in August 2007.[4]

References to the settlement exist before the period of the Revolution of 1821 as Vresto or Vrasto, recorded among the villages and settlements that belonged to the then province of Arcadia - Zourtsa section.[5] After the liberation, it is officially mentioned in 1835 as Vresto, annexed to the then municipality of Typanaion, and in 1912 in the Government Gazette 262A - 31/08/1912, designated as the seat of the newly founded community of the same name.[6] According to the Kallikratis Plan, together with Loggo, it forms the local community of Vresto, which belongs to the municipal unit of Alifeira of the Municipality of Andritsaina - Krestena, and according to the 2011 census, as a community it has a population of 213 residents, while as a settlement it has 174.[7]
