History
The roots of Trikala can be traced back to the late 18th century. The church of Agios Dimitrios was built in 1750. The original name of Trikala is unknown, however, there is a committee document issued by the Metropolis of Thessaloniki to pay two members of the school committee a school tax of two grossia to the Ottoman state on behalf of the Trikala school.
Trikala was part of the Ottoman Empire until the Balkan Wars of 1913, when it became part of Greece. The majority of the population of Trikala to this day consists of natives and refugees from the former Kingdom of Eastern Rumelia, with its capital at Plovdiv, following persecution from 1895 to 1925. There was no mutual exchange of populations between the two countries and their descendants.[1] In 1935, Trikala saw an influx of Sarakatsani Greek pastoralists who lived a nomadic life, as well as many refugees from Pontus, and Russia before 1940.[2]
