Pyrgos (Πύργος) Fokida
Pyrgos is a mountain settlement located in Dorida, Phocis Prefecture, at an altitude of 510 meters[1] with 23 residents, according to the 2011 census. It is the Local Community of Pyrgos of the Municipal Unit of Efpalio, Municipality of Dorida[2].
Geography
Pyrgos is 19 km from Efpalio, 70 km from Lidoriki and 85 km from Amfissa[3]. It is located east of Efpalio and north of Marathia.
History
The old name of Pyrgos was Karoutia and initially the settlement was located at the location "Paliochori". Due to its destruction by the Turks, the residents moved and founded Karoutia, on the slopes of the Trikorfo mountain range and Sergoula[4]. It was renamed in 1959 with the Government Gazette 5/1959[5]. Its name is due to an ancient stone tower above the village. During the Greek Revolution of 1821, no Turk set foot in the village. Omer Vryonis reached the location "Lakkos", but was stopped there by local fighters. Until the 1970s, it was bustling with life and many of its residents were engaged in agriculture and livestock farming. However, in the 1960s and 1970s, there was a large population movement and gradually almost all the village's residents settled in the neighboring coastal village of Marathia, seeking better living conditions. Despite its desolation, in the late 1990s it was electrified and acquired a rudimentary water supply network.

The patron saint is Saint Demetrius and his church dominates the center of the village. There is also the church of Saint Efthymius and the chapel of the Ascension, where an old monastery used to exist, which celebrates the Ascension every year. In the center of the village there is a spring under a huge centuries-old plane tree. It has springs with plenty of cold water. The elementary school, an elegant stone building, was built by the villagers themselves and has been converted into a guesthouse. The houses in Pyrgos are stone-built and constructed following traditional techniques[3].
