Potamia (Ποταμιά) Achaia

Potamia, better known colloquially as Vesinaika, is a small settlement in Achaia. It has its own church, Agios Konstantinos, while in the past there was also a primary school in the area[2].

Location

It is built at an altitude of 600 meters in the Skoupeikos Plain, two and a half kilometers from the new settlement of Pau, after the location of Hani Kalatha and along (parts of) the Patras-Tripoli National Road ("111"). The Paos River flows next to the settlement. Close to it are the traditional settlement of Vesini, the old and new settlement of Pau, the small settlements of Dehounaiika and Bafi, the main village of Dafni (Strezova), Nasia, Pefko and the settlements of Chovoli.

History

The location named "Vesineika Kalyvia" was mentioned in 1901 as a seasonal settlement, seventeen hours by road from Patras, seven and a half hours from Kalavryta, one and a half hours from the main village of Strezova (now Daphne) and two and a quarter hours from Sopoto (now Aroania)[3][4], which is identical to the current settlement[5]. Its inhabitants come from the neighboring traditional settlement of Vesini[6], hence its name.

The modern name "Potamia" comes from the location of the settlement next to the Paos stream.

Administrative development

On 16/10/1940 it was officially recognized as a settlement and was annexed to the then Community of Vesini, while with the Government Gazette 71A of 27/03/1973, when the Community of Vesini was abolished, it was subordinated to the Community of Pau[7][8][9]. According to the administrative division of the Kallikratis Program in force in Greece since 1/1/2011, it is a settlement of the Local Community of Pau of the Municipal Unit of Pai of the "Kallikratiko" Municipality of Kalavryta, while before the implementation of the "Kapodistrian" administrative reform it was a settlement of the Community of Pau and then became a settlement of the Municipal District of Pau of the "Kapodistrian" Municipality of Pai[7].

Demographic evolution

The demographic evolution of the settlement according to the national censuses[10][11] is as follows:
1940 1951 1961 1971 1981 1991 2001 2011
154[4] 176[4] 152[4] 163[4] 94[4] 46[4] 54[4][12] 17[13]
