Petra (Πέτρα) Ioannina
Petra is a mountainous village in Eastern Zagori, Ioannina prefecture, Epirus, at an altitude of 960 meters[2].
Geographical features - attractions
Petra is included in the Zagorochoria and specifically in Eastern Zagori[3][4]. It is located Archived 2019-01-18 at the Wayback Machine. northwest of the city of Ioannina at a distance of 38.5 km, 23 km. west of Metsovo and 11 km. northwest of the Peristeri/Chrysovitsa junction of the Egnatia Motorway[5]. The village has the traditional character of the region with stone houses, picturesque squares, stone-built cobblestone streets, fountains and arched bridges. Sights include the two majestic rocks at the "Agia Paraskevi" location and the 1973 church of the Holy Trinity. The climb to the rocks, one of which reaches 55 meters, is done with a regular staircase, while previously there was a wooden one[6].
Administrative information
It was officially mentioned as a settlement in 1919, after the liberation, with the Government Gazette 184A-19/08/1919 designating it as the seat of the homonymous community[7]. According to the Kallikratis program, it constitutes the local community of Petra, which belongs to the municipal unit of Eastern Zagori of the Municipality of Zagori and according to the 2011 census has a population of 153 residents[8].
