Isaakio (Ισαάκιο) Evros
Isaakio is a lowland village in the Evros regional unit at an altitude of 45 meters[1].
Geography - History
Isaakio is located 4.5 km. N.-NE. of Didymoteicho, towards the border line with Turkey and the Evros River. Previously, during the Turkish occupation, it was referred to as "Isak Pasha" and participated in the uprising of the region during the Greek Revolution of 1821, led by the fighter Georgios Liologlou. This effort ended in failure, after the defeat of the revolutionary forces in the Battle of Saltikioi and the village was completely destroyed by the Turkish nobleman Hadjiestref Aga[2][3]. It is officially mentioned as a settlement in the Government Gazette 194A-14/08/1924 as being annexed to the then community of Didymoteicho[4]. According to the "Kallikratis" Program, it constitutes the local community of Isaakio, which belongs to the municipal unit of Didymoteicho of the municipality of Didymoteicho and according to the 2021 census it had 316 residents from 407 in 2011[5].
