Aratos is a village in the municipality of Arrianon, in the Rhodopi regional unit, in the region of Eastern Macedonia and Thrace.[1]

Geographical information

Aratos is located at an altitude of 32 meters[2], in the Komotini plain[1]. It is approximately 14 kilometers W.-NW. from Komotini. According to the 2011 census, it has 1,158 inhabitants. With the Kapodistrias program, it was included in the municipality of Fillyra, and was formerly the seat of the Aratos community, in the province of Sapes.[3] Its population is mixed Christian and Muslim.[4] The inhabitants of the village are engaged in the cultivation of tobacco and cotton in small fields. Many of its inhabitants have emigrated to Germany and the Netherlands.[5] It is the largest settlement in the Municipality of Arrianes and its inhabitants are Christians and Muslims[6].

The local community of Aratos is characterized as a rural lowland settlement, with an area of 4,234 km² (2011).[7]
