Agios Petros is a large settlement and seat of the homonymous local community, of the municipal unit (former municipality) of Evropos, of the municipality of Paionia, of the regional unit (former prefecture) of Kilkis, in the region of Macedonia, according to the Kallikrates program.[1][2] Before the Kallikrates program and the Kapodistrias plan, it belonged to the Paionia district of the Kilkis prefecture, in the geographical department of Macedonia.[3][4] According to the 2023 census, the population of the village is 1,204 inhabitants.

Geography

Agios Petros is a small town in the southwestern part of the prefecture of Kilkis. It is located in the fertile plain between Axios to the east and Platanorema to the west, immediately before the border with the prefecture of Pella and at an average altitude of 30. It is approximately 50 km. SW. of Kilkis. The local community is characterized as a rural lowland settlement, with an area of ​​21.465 km² (2011).[1][3][4][5][6]

History

The modern settlement was built in 1810. Previously, there was a settlement, as evidenced by the old church of 1650. The riverside settlements were often destroyed by the floods of the Axios. Around 1800, there were makeshift settlements of huts in the area, of people who worked on Ottoman estates.[10] From 1800, due to a change in the course of the Axios River, the residents abandoned the huts and created the settlement in the place where the old one had been. At that time, the village church (Petros and Pavlos) was also built, as is evident from the inscriptions on the church. Initially, the village was called Petreli or Petrovo. At that time (1810s), the school opposite the church was also built, which operated until 1898, when it was demolished to make way for a new one. During the Macedonian Struggle, the residents actively participated and the village suffered several disasters. Those who distinguished themselves in the games of that period from Agios Petros were Nikolaos Georgiadis, Christos Ioannidis, Dimitrios Karastogiannis, Athanasios Karatrayanis, Stavros Karatrayanis, Aikaterini Kitsouki, Stavros Kitsoukis, Sotirios Kotzambasis, Athanasios Papadopoulos, Dionysios Papadopoulos and Father-Emmanuel Papamanolis, as well as the chieftains Ioannis Ilkos and Nikolaos Karastogiannis. Agios Petros was characterized by the generals Konstantinos Mazarakis Aenianas and Ioannis Demestichas as the "Spear of Macedonia", due to the bravery and self-sacrifice of its inhabitants at that time[11].

In 1925, many refugees from Eastern Thrace and Asia Minor settled there. During the German occupation and the Greek Civil War, the village was put to the test, with many victims and material damage.

Events

On June 29, the feast of the Apostles Peter and Paul, the village festival is held with several cultural and sporting events.
On July 27, every year, the "Kurbani" is held, a custom of animal sacrifice for the favor of God.
On October 26, two-day cultural events are held
On December 3 and 4, the feast of Agia Varvara, women make traditional sweets, which are distributed to those present
On December 23, the "kolinte" custom is held, where a large fire is lit in the middle of the village [12]. It is said that the custom symbolizes the birth of Christ and specifically the way the shepherds warmed themselves around a large fire in anticipation of the birth of the God-man.

Today

The village has a daycare center, a kindergarten and a 6th grade elementary school, which is housed in two buildings, the old one (which began construction in 1935 and was completed in 1952) and the new one (which was founded in 1984). There is the church of the Apostles Peter and Paul on the north side of the village. The village clubs include the Cultural Educational Beautification Club "Agios Petros" and the village sports club M.A.S. THYELLA Agios Petros (founded in 1966).
