Agia Varvara (Αγία Βαρβάρα) Imathia

Agia Varvara is a village and seat of the homonymous local community, of the municipal unit and municipality of Veroia, of the regional unit (former prefecture) of Imathia, in the region of Macedonia, according to the Kallikratis program.[1][2] Before the Kapodistrias plan and the Kallikratis program, it belonged to the prefecture of Imathia, in the geographical department of Macedonia.[3][4] It was created by Greeks from Eastern Rumelia (Northern Thrace)[5] and previously, until 1953, the village was called Varvares.[3] The village was the birthplace of the nun Magdalene Halvatzi (1925-2014), who served at the Holy Monastery of Agios Athanasios in Sfinitsa, Imathia, and at the Holy Monastery of Panagia Makryrachis in Pieria.[5]

Geography

Agia Varvara is a village in the south-central part of the prefecture of Imathia. It is located in a lowland area very close to the Aliakmonas dam and the E90 highway, at an average elevation of 80. It is approximately 6 km. SE. of Veroia. The local community is characterized as a rural lowland settlement, with an area of ​​8.167 km² (2011).[1][3][4][6][7][8]

Administrative changes until "Kallikratis"

The settlement was recognized in 1928 as Varvares and was annexed to the municipality of Veroia in the prefecture of Thessaloniki. In 1946 it was incorporated into the prefecture of Imathia. With the Government Gazette 142A - 29/05/1952 the community was established with the detachment of the settlement of Varvares from the municipality of Veroia and its designation as the seat of the community. With the Government Gazette 195A - 31/07/1953 it was renamed Agia Varvara. With the Government Gazette 244A - 04/12/1997 it was detached from the community of Agia Varvara and annexed to the municipality of Veroia.[2]

Customs

The Kurbani on the feast of Agios Tryphonas with food offerings and traditional dances. The village produces tsipouro from cauldrons that, in the past, were over 40, while today there are less than 10 left [12]
