Agia Triada (Αγία Τριάς) Karditsa

Agia Triada or Merichovo, is a lowland village of the Thessalian Plain in the Prefecture of Karditsa[1] at an altitude of 95 meters.[2] It belongs to Sellana of the Municipality of Palamas. Its inhabitants are mostly farmers.

Historical information

Since ancient times, a thriving city of Thessaly called Merikastron developed in the area. For unknown reasons, it declined during the Byzantine period. At some point it took on the Slavic ending "ovo". The Greek tribe of the Karagounis, who come from the Thessalians, developed in the area. Merichovo, together with the villages of the wider Sellani area (Proastio, Mizdani, Kalogrianna, Servota, Korda, Rizava, Makrychori, Marathea, Pedino, Kranea, Magoula, Paleochori) is considered the heart of the Karagounis. The inhabitants of the village are perhaps the ones who have preserved the tradition of the Karagounis the most, away from tourism. Indigenous, talkative, hardworking, with a characteristic dialect! People of frugality, of toil but also of revelry, adapted their daily life, work and entertainment to the possibilities and needs of the plain. They played a leading role in the uprising against the landlords, in the events of Kileler, like all the Karagounis.

Geographical information

Merichovo is located south of the Pinios River, on the northern border of the prefecture of Karditsa with the prefecture of Trikala. It is 23.5 km W. from Palamas, 15 km N.-NE. from Karditsa and 18 km SE. from Trikala. To the north and west of the village passes the Central Greece Motorway, while to the west the Trikala - Karditsa National Road.

It belongs to the villages of Sellani with the main village being the town of Proastio. It borders to the north with Proastio and to the west with Kalogriana. The village is included in the "Valtochoria" of the Municipality of Palamas, its inhabitants are mostly Karagounides, which is why they are called "Valtokaragounides".

Sights

To the north and towards the Suburb there is a prehistoric site which has been excavated and based on its findings (shells, vases, etc.) was dated by archaeologist Christos Tsountas to the Prehistoric Era of the Early Neolithic (6,000 to 5,800 BC).[3] At the location "Dovres" or "Raches" an archaic sanctuary and cemetery have been found.[4] The church of the Holy Trinity and its holy icons have been characterized since 2002 "as monuments and works of art requiring special state protection, with a surrounding area of 50 m.".[5]

Culture

The Cultural Association of Merichovo is active in the village, which was founded in 1981. Since then, it has been developing activities aimed at rescuing & preserving local tradition & passing it on to younger generations. It is one of the most active associations in the area and participates almost every year in the Karaiskakeia in Karditsa, in the annual Karagounikos Andamoma and in other cultural events in Greece and abroad. Finally, it maintains a rich photographic archive and a blood bank at the General Hospital of Karditsa.

The village and its inhabitants are considered a genuine example of the Karagounides of Thessaly.

Sports

The football club 'Doxa Merichovo' (or Doxa Agias Triadas as it is officially called) is active in the village. Its greatest success was winning the E.P.S. Cup. Karditsa in the 2012-13 season, a very important event for the village, since such a thing for a village team like Merichovo (in which only locals competed), was almost impossible. The team's colors are white and black.

Infrastructure

The village has a large square, a school and three churches (Agia Triada, Agios Taxiarchis, Agios Damianos). The wood-carved iconostasis of Agia Triada is considered to be of unique beauty. Finally, there is a traditional grocery store which is still operating today.
