Landscape with Mercury and Battus, Jacob Pynas

In Greek mythology, Battus is the name of two different people:

  1. Son of Polymnestus, founded Cyrene, thus fulfilling a prophecy given to his ancestor, Euphemus.
  2. A shepherd from Pylos, Battus witnessed Hermes stealing Apollo's cattle. Though he promised his silence, he told many others. Hermes turned him to stone.
